Ferrets can get through the smallest of openings, as you may already have discovered. We wedge towels VERY securely under the doors to the room we let ours run in. Upholstered furniture - especially sofa-sleepers - seem to be our guys' favorite places to hid, which makes it hard to find them when it's time to get back in the cage. We provide lots of tunnels made out of the corrugated stuff they make dryer vents out of - keeps them out of the furniture a little.

As for smell, we have had really good luck with the liquid that you add to their water to eliminate the poop odor. It takes a week or so to start working and it doesn't get rid of all of the odor, but it definitely makes a difference!

I never had a problem with ferret smell. My two ferrets loved to get baths, so they were always smelling fresh! As for ferret proofing a room...its a lot of work. I only let mine roam in certain areas of my house and blocked off the rest. Towels under doors and stuff. They can get outside easily, too. So be careful.

I found the perfect product for this and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a natural carbon product called FRIDGE IT carbon odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays, and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. and gels and oils that say keep away from fabric, pets, etc. and just don't eliminate odors. Just put a couple near or on ferret cage and area. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and internet. Definitely worth trying

I've had fuzzies for 10 years. We've always taken the approach to ferretproofing like babyproofing- wouldn't want your baby there? probably don't want you ferret baby there either. Ferrets are able to turn themselves completely around in about 2 inches of space since they are extremely flexible. So you may want to invest in putting something on the bottom of the door so they can't slide under. :)

They like to burrow so couches and furniture with places to dig and den could potentially be dangerous if your fuzzie gets stuck. I recommend a hard surface flooring as they love to rub their faces on carpet and rugs and their scent glands are near their ears. placing items not harmful to the fuzzies in corners (to block the corner) will deter them from using the corner as a temp litter box :) As for anti smell; good food and the odor eliminator are good. Clean ears are the best- ask your ferret expert vet how to clean their ears. Also the ferret OK spray bath helps

anti smell remedies open a window or get animal safe disinfectant. if the ferret is going to be running around everywhere then it might be better for you to have tiles. and take all furniture (everything that is not for the ferret) out. if you want a certain place then block off all corners or small spaces .
