What was the first U.S. state to get statehood?

Just wondering, first thought is Pennsylvania. Then got to thinking about maybe Mass., Delaware or Virginia.

You go by who was the first state to ratify the US Constitution. It was Delaware. How can you be sure? Well, apart from just looking it up, here is an easy way: their quarter was the first one issued by the Treasury. It is the one with the rider & horse on the back. The state quarters are being released in order of ratification which is when they became a state (not a colony). It went like this:

    Delaware - December 7, 1787

    Pennsylvania - December 12, 1787

    New Jersey - December 18, 1787

    Georgia - January 2, 1788

    Connecticut - January 9, 1788

    Massachusetts - February 6, 1788

    Maryland - April 28, 1788

    South Carolina - May 23, 1788

    New Hampshire - June 21, 1788

    Virginia - June 25, 1788

    New York - July 26, 1788

    North Carolina - November 21, 1789

    Rhode Island - May 29, 1790

Former colonies joined the union and became states by voting in the Constitution which was written after we won the Revolutionary War. Delaware was the first to sign, which makes them the first State. Their state motto today is "Delaware First."
