Curious about Best Answer Violation?

I recently gave an answer I recall getting a best answer for a legal question in which I described how to handle a court situation. The individual asking sent me a very nice e-mail thanking me. Two weeks later I got a violation notice. Is there any way to find out exactly what caused this? I'm not sure exactly what caused it (according to the rules, which I understand can be...vague at times). Wouldn't it be helpful if an attachment explained what specifically caused this to happen?

(I expected this to happen and am not surprised, it seems that it's an inevitability for a variety of reasons).

I agree with stephen k (above) about this. It's a flaw in the system that an abuse report does not have to be valid.

Recently I prticipated in a survey regarding YA, but was not really aware of this issue at that time. Next time a survey comes my way, it will be one of the issues I do flag.

Of course, to some extent these things are subjective ... I have reported people for being racist or abusive to children, but others might see nothing wrong with what they said, or even support it.

Someone has to decide I guess and Yahoo owns the site!

In your own case, maybe the advice you gave was too close to the bone for someone, violated the law somewhere else in some way, or could have been regarded as soliciting for business (I'm not suggesting that was the case).

Unfortunately, an explanation is not included, nor is the comment made by the person so you don't have the chance to defend yourself.

OTOH, imagine being Yahoo having to ort through all the defences, lol. What a headache.

Maybe they could have a section dedicated to potential deletions asking users to vote! Hehehe

    Best wishes :-)

Yes it would help if a reason was included in the violation notice. You can add your voice to the chorus of suggestions on the Y/A forum at http://suggestions.yahoo.com/?prop=answers .

Either a user reported you for an abuse of guidelines or a Y/A staffer/software just pulled the question or answer off. It's just a system that combines human discretion with various automated software, so mistakes happen. We can't tell you for sure, so you should try to get an official answer from Y/A.

Whenever you receive a violation notice just respond back to the email address provided with the Q&A and your reasoning on why it doesn't violate community guidelines (http://answers.yahoo.com/info/community_guidelines... ) or just ask why you received the violation. Then post the same on the Wrongful Violations board at http://messages.answers.yahoo.com/answers/forumvie... .

I received my points back with an apology notice after two weeks. That's all you can do. No one else can really help besides the Yahoo! Answers Community Care people.

No. I have been reported for suggesting a book and when I appealed and asked for the reason why I was just told that I was denied .. but they still didn't give me a reason why. I think they pick and choose who they want to give a hard time to and no, I don't think they really read the appeals.

Someone just reported you for any reason they felt like. You can appeal the violation and get your points back if you can show that what you wrote didn't break any rules.

I do believe that would be a good idea. It would be nice to know they actually researched it and agreed that it was a violation and why it was a violation, etc......but I guess Y!A! will do their thing no matter what!!!!

The best way to find out is to ask the Yahoo! Answers team about it at this link: http://messages.answers.yahoo.com/answers/forumvie...

No, there isn't. Y!A will protect the identity of the filer and (here's the rub) an abuse report doesn;t even have to be valid.

  • 1 decade ago

You need to contact Yahoo and appeal your violation.
