  • Over Time Question? I've been hired as a sales manager for a small business.?

I was told that I'd be working a 44-45 hour week (the cut off for overtime) but in reality am working between 50-55 hours a week.

My question; am I entitled to over time?

I get the impression that the boss hired me as a salaried employee specifically so he could take advantage of the Exemptions that apply to salaried workers when dealing with overtime.

I'm unclear if my job description falls under these laws or not.

I'm in NY State, if that matters.

  • Use of Evidence?

    I've got a trial coming up where we've got charges against a neighbor for stalking and harassment. My question is this;

We had an earlier incident a year ago which went to mediation where he agreed to seek psychiatric help, thus we dropped the charges.

I know the evidence of his actions from that time can't be used to charge him with a crime (as the charges related were dropped), but can we use it to show character? (Video tape of his often bizarre, violent behavior, for example).

This case is in New jersey.

  • Damaged Laptop Screen?

I've got an Hp Pavilion Entertainment Laptop 6000. It's got a star patterned fracture in the lower left corner that can't be felt by touch that's causing the the bottom half of the screen to not display graphics properly.

(The laptop is used as a desk computer so I doubt it's impact damage. Possibly it's liquid damage).

My Question; can this be repaired? Does the whole screen have to be replaced? The computer was $2,000 new, a year ago, I'm wondering if the repair price will be worth it.

I'm also wondering if I can do the work myself. I've experience working with desk top computer hardware repair, but have never done laptops.

Finally, if it's not cost effective to repair the screen, can I hook a monitor up through the usb port?

(The warranty is no longer viable. The computer was purchased through CompUsa, which shut down. Records of the sale are unobtainable).

  • Partition Space Problem: Shoot me or the Computer?!?!?

I'm using Vista. I started with a 7 gig partition, it's now telling me I have hardly half a gig free. (I did at one point start a back up of the c: drive to the partition space accidentally, but deleted off those files).

When I check what's in there, it tells me there's a media.idbin file taking up 528k and the partition file that doesn't state any size whatsoever.

I can't find anyway to free up the space and it's causing problems. Is there a way to re-adjust the partition without formating the whole drive? I ran disk clean, checked for bad sectors, everything is checking out okay.

As far as I know, there's no recovery data on the drive. I use a CD for a restore point. The one time I blue screened the computer wouldn't recognize a restore point from the partition. As best I can tell the partition is empty.

    I'm using administrator access.

Any questions, feel free to ask. I appreciate the help.

  • What is the name of the Police Warrant Search Database and...?

(For example, in the Tri State area), I was discussing with someone how the database works for police who do a search on a name for warrants.

I recalled that it's a somewhat haphazard system, with various state/counties hooked up for information sharing but not always in a logical way (ie; North Bergen New Jersey is hooked into sharing with Bronx and Manhattan NY, but not Queens (for computer search, otherwise it requires a phone call).

Is it still this way or have they updated the system?

  • Collecting Court Judgment from Disability Person?

I have a family member who won a small claims court judgment against a person who doesn't work, only collects disability.

Part of the damages were to cover replacement of the destroyed object, another part was for harassment (emotional damages? Not sure).

My question is; this person boasted that judgements can't be collected from a person's disability (the guilty party's only source of traceable income), and thus, will not have to pay the consequences.

    Is this true?!?!

  • Reliable Herbal Companies?

It's my understanding that companies making herbal remedies have no government oversight as to the product's potency or freshness here in America.

Does anyone know of a site or link that rates various companies for providing quality product?

(I remember two or three that used to give a written gaurentee to this effect, they were rated the best).

  • Electoral College Vs. People's Vote?

Someone recently said to me that the electoral vote is actually the deciding vote in a presidential election.

The people's vote is only relevant if the electoral vote is a tie. I know, the electoral college is supposed to vote according to their constituency, but it isn't required (only effects the representatives chance of re-election, after all.)

  • Phony Sweepstakes...?

I keep getting a "you've won 2 million dollars" sweepstakes e-mail from a supposed london bank.

How do I report this to yahoo! and/ or to whatever agency may be interested in following up on fraud/computer scams?

Also, is there a program on yahoo or in windows that lets you know the actual origin of the server/country the e-mail is coming from?

  • Backyard Poultry Law?

I have a friend who just got a rooster and a couple of chickens as "pets" in North Bergen, New Jersey (house dwelling).

Is this legal??? I'd think it would be really annoying to the neighbors. I went to animal law.com and tried to do a serach, but couldn't get a match for the description I put in. Does anyone know anything about the code/law for this sort of thing, or how I'd do an appropriate search to get the information I'm curious about? (His neighbors are complaining about the rooster crowing, and I warned him he'd probably get cited, but can't back it up. I thought it might be a noise decibel complaint, at the least!)

  • E-mail problem!! Help, please!!!?

Every time I try to write an e-mail on Yahoo Mail, whether using compose or reply, it skips letters. I type normally and a lot of the keystrokes don't register. It isn't the keyboard, as I use the same one for everything and it is fine everywhere else, on or off yahoo.

My wife uses the same computer with her yahoo! account and doesn't have this problem. Her account name is the same as mine with a "1" added, and we're using the same password for each account (how trusting!!!) Could any of this be causing this problem? It's not the computer, has to be an error in my e-mail account somehow. My account was created first. It's been happening since we got onto yahoo. I tried asking this once before and was asked for "more details". What other details are needed if this isn't enough?

I can't send e-mails like this, I have to type each letter/space one at a time and check if it registered.

  • What would you do if CBS stopped you on the street?

I was just getting a lotto ticket at 40th and 8th in Manhattan and a CBS intern stopped me and asked if I wanted to be interviewed by some reporter (I don't know his name, but he looked familiar) for a puff piece (my words) on the 7-7-7 lotto thing. I guess that being that people are supposedly buying lotto tickets with the numbers 7-7-7 for the powerball drawing tomorrow.

I was horrified by the idea and said no!!!

Is that unusual? Has this ever happened to you? How many of you would have said yes? And why? Wouldn't you be embarassed to be a part of that? She seemed surprised by my reaction. Did I miss my big break?!?!

  • Brain Damaged Stalker Neighbor?

We have a brain-damaged (inoperable tumor) neighbor who is obsessed with stalking and sexually harassing (chiefly verbal) woman. He did this with my wife for a period of time, and pleaded out to a misdemeanor and a promise to get help (he didn't). Since then, we've discovered this is something he does on a regular basis. He has been in jail for crimes related to this sort of thing. We're looking into his criminal record but haven't gotten the information back yet. We do know he's stalked at least four other woman over the years, one of them a 15 year old girl.

He's never hospitalized anyone yet, and is fairly stupid and tends to get himself in trouble easily. We don't think he's listed as a sexual predator (yet). Are we legally able to put information on the computer about him/ notify our neighbors in any way? Can his criminal record and address be made public? He isn't involved with these woman at all, he just goes after what his "type" is.Thin, little pretty blonde females.

  • Keystroke problem?

Does anyone know what this is? Sometimes when I go into compose/reply to a message in e-mail, every third or forth keystroke I type doesn't register. Anyone? (Usually if I log off and go back in, the problem doesn't recur).

  • Curious about Best Answer Violation?

I recently gave an answer I recall getting a best answer for a legal question in which I described how to handle a court situation. The individual asking sent me a very nice e-mail thanking me. Two weeks later I got a violation notice. Is there any way to find out exactly what caused this? I'm not sure exactly what caused it (according to the rules, which I understand can be...vague at times). Wouldn't it be helpful if an attachment explained what specifically caused this to happen?

(I expected this to happen and am not surprised, it seems that it's an inevitability for a variety of reasons).

  • replacing lost I.D.?

A relative just lost everything in a house fire. She's going through hell trying to replace her I.D. She has no incoming utility bills (everything was in her husband's name). She has no effective I.D. The government is no longer recognizing her as an existing citizen.

DMV, Social Security, Passport, all have told her she needs photo I.D. from one of the above organizations. She's a housewife, so has no employer or paystubs to show, no credit cards (anything like that is in her husbands name). They don't even have a copy of there marriage license (married out of country, will take ahile to get, she's told, and, the embassy wants proof of who she is).

Thanks to the new security measures in this country, she's been made a non person. What can she do to remedy this? I'm stumped. Should she just shoot herself???

  • Editing a .cfg file with vista notepad problem?

I have the cheat for Hero's and Might and Magic 5. It tells you to edit the Autoexec.cfg file in profiles and add a line to use the cheat.

My problem is that when you go to save the file, it saves as a text file thus ruining the file.

I choose the option all files in Save As, and then it gives the option in programming below for:

    Unicode

    Unicode big endian

    UTF-8

What am I doing wrong here? Do I choose one of these above options?

    This is in Vista, btw.
