USA Another longtime Yahoo user, not a member of Yahoo! staff _________________________________________________________ It's that time, folks. Cutbacks abound, and that includes my activity on Yahoo! Answers. I'll post the random question or answer, but that's about it. Feel free to add me as a Y/A contact or contact me via Y/A e-mail message. Check out my past answers that relate to Y!360, Y!Answers, Y!Profiles/Pulse/Profile, blogging, and Chicago (travel & dining). It's been a pleasure to help where I could. Thanks to everyone - some Y/A members, my Y/A network, and Y/A staff - for supporting my activity here.

  • Any advice on how to keep friends' secrets or confidences without lying?

For example, many times friends will share "confidences" with me. I'm not one to gossip. (Yet that's partially because I can't remember what I'm supposed to keep my mouth shut about or not. So, I usually go with not saying anything. LOL.).

Yet sometimes I get caught up with innocent questions from mutual friends like, "How is he or she?". If the person isn't doing well but doesn't want the details shared, I still feel that I can't say my typical "Fine" or "Good", as that wouldn't be true. My latest strategy is to say that they aren't doing so well and that the friend should call the other friend. Of course, I may still get pressed for details, which I still won't give. The situation gets awkward as I'm trying not to say to much about one person, but then I may risk alienating or pissing off the other. Some people are just sensitive like that, when information among friends isn't freely shared.

Do you have any strategies for handling such situations?

As usual, serious and constructive responses only, please.

  • What brand/style of chip-resistant, dishwasher-safe, and microwave-safe plates do you recommend?

    Location - USA (Chicago)

I'm going to try this one more time. If you don't have a specific answer to the posed question, please refrain from answering. I'm looking for only serious answers.

By microwave safe, I do mean that the plate is designed (or comprised of materials) that don't burn your hand upon each removal from the microwave. LOL.

(That is stated in joking manner. I do understand that heat-resistant gloves, pot holders, and towels can be used to avoid the issue. However, some materials retain less heat than others. It's sad that I have to clarify everything on this site.) Also, the chip-resistant aspect is particularly important.

    Thanks!

  • Where is the article about the future of multi-level trains in Asia that was on Y!News recently?

I spotted an article about a possible train (maybe hi-speed) that's designed to straddle a highway. The origin maybe Japan or China, but the point is that you can see train cover the entire highway, with the cars passing through underneath. The image was more like a colored sketch.

Could you provide the link to that article and image because I'm having trouble finding them? The article was seen via the Yahoo! home page this month, but the story may not have originated through Yahoo.

    Serious answers only, please.

  • What product provides excellent clear, waterproof (i.e. sweatproof) sunscreen or sunblock protection?

I'm searching for a waterproof sunscreen or sunblock that will not drip as I sweat. I play outdoor sports in the summer, which doesn't typically include swimming. I'm looking for specific product recommendations, and an explanation or personal story with your answer would be appreciated. The product should be clear (or absorbent enough to turn clear), can come in spray (preferred) or lotion form, and should be reasonably priced - not above $20.

    Serious answers requested.

Products already tried, which I felt weren't that effective:

    - Coppertone Sport Sunscreen Continuous Spray (SPF 30)

    - Neutrogena Fresh Cooling Body Mist Sunblock (unsure of SPF, likely 30+)

    - Neutrogena Dry-Touch Ultra Sheer Sunblock (unsure of SPF, likely 30+)

    - Walgreens Sunscreen Lotion with Parsol 1789 (SPF 50)

  • What are some affordable, yet flavorful dining options in the Pilsen neighborhood?

    * I've eaten at Nuevo Leon, but was not pleased overall. I found the atmosphere stifling and the food pretty bland. The BYOB option, free parking lot, and service were great through.

    * I'm looking for $9 to $18 price range for dinner entree, with many meatless choices.

What are some other restaurant suggestions?

  • What desserts can be made from a bunch of medium-sized oranges?

    * They are a mix of Valencia and Navel varieties. There are about 10 or more oranges.

    * Looking for ideas for desserts other than those involving gelatin, flan, fruit salad, or eating them plain.

    * Recipes aren't necessary, but are appreciated. Looking for ideas that will use up a lot of oranges, not just one or two.

  • What are advantages or disadvantages of using masters degree honorifics in the contact heading of a resume?

Ph.D., M.D., and J.D. are commonly used in resumes, but what about masters degrees like M.S.W.?

Some people think it's pretentious. Other people believe it's an acceptable way of showing the results of hard work. What do you think? What are the pros and cons of using masters degree honorifics in resumes?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people in the human resources field, or those people who are or have been in a position to hire someone after looking at many resumes.

  • What's the best way to keep computer files automatically updated between hard drives (read details)?

With several hard drives, it's hard to keep files up-to-date with the latest versions of files, but still have the choice of preventing some files from being overridden.

I'm somewhat familiar with ghosting options. I'm not sure if imaging drives is the best method. I also know about setting up automatic backups via the Windows Backup Utility.

I'm just wondering if there is a better way to backup files from computer hard drives to external hard drives in an automated manner, but allows for some choice in the matter. Is ghosting the best way? Is there some software that would work too?

Windows XP Professional and Windows XP.

  • What's the best way to make a vegetarian gelatin?

I'm vegetarian, but not strict about it. I eat dairy, fish, and once-in-a-while *gasp* regular JELL-O.

Yet out of curiosity, how could I make a strictly vegetarian gelatin that is very similar to the sugar and animal-based JELL-O product?

*Serious answers only. Also, experience in making (or even eating) vegetarian gelatin is preferred.

  • What great travel stores remain in Chicago?

In last decade, some great travel stores have closed. Visitors could by maps, travel books, luggage, and other travel accessories from these stores. Such defunct stores include the Savvy Traveller that was on Michigan Ave. (http://www.thesavvytraveller.com/ ) and Rand McNally formerly located on Wacker Dr. and Adams.

Does anyone know of other great travel stores in the Chicagoland area?

  • What should I look for when buying a good corkscrew?

Obviously, I can't go around opening wine bottles to test them out. So, how do I purchase a good one? I do want one with a foil cutter. I don't want to spend several minutes trying to get a cork out either.

I'm looking for serious responses only, with any of the following elements:

    - Corkscrew purchasing tips

    - Corkscrew review sites/pages

    - Top corkscrew brands/models

    - Personal corkscrew buying experience

    Thanks in advance!

  • What can you make with Greek yogurt?

I bought some on a whim. I probably have a recipe involving this ingredient somewhere. So, what are common dishes that utilize greek yogurt? Also, if you could provide authentic recipes (or a links to), then that would be especially appreciated so I can use up this tub.

Note, I'm talking about GREEK plain yogurt, not the regular yogurt made by companies like Yoplait and Dannon.

  • What stores sell (or what brands carry) women's down coats with the highest fill power (online or off)?

I'm primarily interested in hooded, down-filled coats that are almost knee-length or lower. I don't like coats with belts.

I'm looking for answers from people who can identify specific stores or coat brands, not ones who want to give actual sales pitches.
