What are some affordable, yet flavorful dining options in the Pilsen neighborhood?
* I've eaten at Nuevo Leon, but was not pleased overall. I found the atmosphere stifling and the food pretty bland. The BYOB option, free parking lot, and service were great through.
* I'm looking for $9 to $18 price range for dinner entree, with many meatless choices.
What are some other restaurant suggestions?
I meant, though. lol
Thanks for all the answers so far! It's going to be difficult to choose between them.

Abuelo's Mexican Grill, 2007 S Damen. Actually it's in Heart of Chicago, but close enough. Unbelievably awesome Mexican sandwiches (tortas.) A neighborhood favorite and always highly rated on the Chicago websites. I used to go out of my way to eat there when I lived all the way up in Edgewater. Really good and pretty cheap. I think you can BYOB there, too.
Here's the Yelp listing. It is BYOB, BTW.

I've worked in Pilsen many years and agree with your opinion of Nuevo Leon. I can't stand the smell of the place. I've found that people either love the place or hate it. A favorite restaurant in Pilsen is La Condesa at Ashland & Blue Island/Cermak. This is a place where Mexicans bring their families to eat. Many seafood specialties but the diverse menu will have something you will like...free parking lot.
