Potty training problems?
My 3 year old is fully potty trained - but at home only. He refuses to go anywhere else, whether if it's at a friend's house, a restaurant, etc. He just started preschool and I hoped this would help. We are now on day 3 where he can miraculously hold his pee all day long - we're talking 7 am to 5:30 pm. He goes home and has a huge pee. We've tried everything, rewarding him, encouragement, going in with others, talking to him, explaining it, but nothing has worked. I'm afraid he can get sick by holding it in that long, I can't even hold it that long myself. Everything else at school has been going well, he's eating, playing, napping...
Does anyone have some suggestions to try?

Holding it that long is NOT good, but think you already know that. My best suggestion it to talk to the preschool staff about it. They know their program and interact with him more than any of us, so they would know better. The school also should have a resource library that you can borrow from. Borrow a book specifically on potty training and doing it not at home. These books are written by professionals, not that hands on mom's don't know a thing or two about the topic. Also make sure that he getting plenty of liquids, so that he will have to go pee. Kids are smart, i doubt that he is drinking much at school so that he can hold it in.
GOOD LUCK!

OKAY I KNOW THIS ONE. They make these foldable potty seats that attach to toilets, even if he is used to a regular potty this will make him feel that it is "his". I have a elmo one for my daughter, it folds up and stays in the diaper bag and she says it is her "potty", Take him to the store like babies r us(we got ours from there on-line) Let him chose the one he wants, They have different characters. Tell him that this is his special potty and that only he can use it, no one else(make him feel that he is special and only he can use it), Let him use it at home and explain that he is so lucky to have this potty, that other kids don't get such special things. My daughter gladly started being proud of her on the go "potty".
Also it is VERY bad that he holds his pee all day, that can cause UTI and worse.

My son would not poop at preschool, and we found out he didn't like the potty. I cleared it with the director, and we brought him in a soft potty seat. Maybe try to find out what it is that he doesn't like about peeing outside of the home, and try to make it more comfortable for him. There should be a sollution. Good luck!

See if it's o.k at preschool to take a little potty. Maybe if you always take it with you he will at least go on that. We keep a Diego potty in the car with us for just in case situations,. At first it was because thats all our 3 year old would go on but now it is just for emergences. I think it will pass. Our son stopped after a few weeks of taking his potty with us.

Try to explain to him that he can get sick by holding it.
When youo first take him into the preschool in the morning, go WITH him to the bathroom so he will know it's an okay place.
At age 3, my daughter got a kidney and bladder infection from holding it in all night and half the next day.

Set him on the potty when he starts to pee. When he uses the potty give him a piece of chocolate and tell him the next time he goes on the potty he gets another one

I had this with our son as well . I don't know if three is another sibling that is younger but this worked for us. I told him he wasn't by big boy anymore he was my baby boy casue only baby's pea their pants. I borrowed a diaper from a friend that fit him. I made him wear it all day afraid it would back fire but I was at my wits end. Well it worked. that night he came out of his room told me potty mom .. When I went to put another diaper on him he said no I am your big boy and that was it ,. Worth a try!
Good Luck!

He will work through it, getting him a special potty is a good idea, but He will soon become familiar with his surroundings such as school and other places and be fine.
DEFINITELY enlist dad in this one if you can. Dad can show him it is cool to use the potty in other places and make it an "adventure"

It is not good for him to hold it in that long, next time you go out to eat or a friends house, have dad take him with him to the bathroom, also if they are outside somewhere privet like maybe a walk in the woods have dad show him its ok, to relief himself outside, you really need to try anything and everything to break this habit, good luck
