How do you become a merchandise vendor at festivals/events?

I'd like to set up a vendor's stall at festivals, fairs, etc. and sell various merchandise (not food).

I don't know how to find a listing of the events that would accept applications for something like this, and I'd also love to know what types of fees are typically involved.

Are there any experienced vendors who could offer advise on how to get started?

I can add that the uniqueness of the product you are selling is very important to your success.

That is the reason so many hand crafted vendors do well. They create a product that is unique. Festival goers want to buy, that is a big part of why they to go to events.

Vendor fees, what you pay to a festival to participate in their event, do vary. As stated above, the better the event the higher the fee.

Beware though. I would strongly urge you to deal with established events, or city/chamber of commerce events until you get to know the business. There are promoters that will sell you a bill of goods in the festival business just as in any other business.

At http://festivalsandevents.com,/ we list festivals, vendors and entertainers. We assisted the FBI in Kentucky with busting a promoter that had stolen many thousands of dollars from vendors over a couple of years. As soon as he was known, he would change his name and set up someplace else.

I have done this before and have found that the bigger the event, the higher the entry fee's but the better the audience. The particular event will have a list of guidelines on their application that will tell you what you can and cannot do. Most states have a listing for fairs, festivals and events in their tourism section of the states website. You can also go to a search engine like Google and type in " fairs & festivals in whatever state you are searching for and the good ones will be listed. Also... there is something called the Ronay guide that is published for the southeast if you happen to want to look in that area of the U.S. www.events2000.com. You will want to invest in a canopy from Sams or BJ's and what tables and chairs you will need to display your product.

If the event has a website, go there first. It should outline what you need to do to apply and all the fees associated. Are you interested in traveling, if so how far?

I would see how you like it first. Find the nearest swap meet and buy a table and try it for a few weeks. This will help show how well recieved your product is, and how much you enjoy it. Trust me, standing all day in the heat, watching your table like a hawk to avoid theft, and wondering how you are going to get to the toilet can really take a toll on a person. At the same time, it is a great way to meet new people.

thats actually a good idea, the fact is that metric custom cruisers are out there in a BIG way. V twin magazine features METRIC cruisers as well as H.D. And Im talking SERIOUS big money jap bikes! I myself have been chopping Jap bikes for years and it takes a lot of skill to do it because there isnt much of an aftermarket for the metric bikes! If somebody would come out with ridgid frames and and other major components guys like me would buy the stuff.I have to make my own or modify a sportster frame. Of course you will have to develop your market people gotta know that you have a product to sell them.
