Pirates of the Carob bean?
I bought some carob powder the other day and made a very yummy vegan carob sponge cake.
Still have plenty of the powder left.
Any tried and tested carob recipe ideas?
(Vegan and not too complicated, please.)
That's a great idea, JenasaurusX. I do sometimes make balls of dried fruit and nuts and roll them in cocoa powder. Will try adding carob!
So far almond+apricot+cocoa has been my favourite combination.
rottincherrie, this is carob: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust_bean
you might know it under a different name.
Some people keep referring to it as "cocoa substitute" or even "natural cocoa substitute" which I think is a shame because carob is not just a substitute for something.
If you ever get a hold on whole dried pods - they can be great nibbles (like, when watching TV or on travel etc). You can eat the whole pod. Cool, eh?

Put the following into a food processor and pulse the heck out of it. Form into balls. Yum!
3/4 cup raw walnuts
1/4 cup raw carob powder
1 cup raisins or a mixture of raisins and dried fruit of your choice
Sometimes I add coconut, too. You can get creative with simple recipe. I make them all the time.

I love making raw halvah! It's so addictive...
Start with about 1/2 cup sesame seeds, and grind in a coffee grinder until it gets "pasty." Add about 4 capfuls of flax seed oil (about 4 tsp), 1 tsp vanilla, and carob powder to taste. Then I add as much honey as needed to make the dough to where I can handle it easily. Then I roll some of the balls in carob powder, and some in coconut and then freeze. They are so delicious, full of calcium, omegas, and vitamin B!

Maybe try to alter a recipe for the drop chocolate oatmeal cookies... use carob instead of cocoa and omit butter. I love carob also...
