Is it safe to water food plants with a vinyl plastic garden hose?

When i first turn on the water it has a very strong plastic smell. I know it is not safe to drink the water, but... won't the vinyl chloride be taken up by my tomatoes and broccoli plants?

Yes - you're fine. The water will be filtered through the ground by the plants, anyway.

The rule of thumb with drinking out of the hose is to run the hose until new water is entering the hose. When you use a hose and throw it down, water remains in the tube. As the water sits, especially in the heat, bacteria and other things can start to develop (which is obviously not good to be drinking!!!). However, once you flush this water out, it should be safe!

it it not the plastic that is not safe when it comes to drinking your hose will be Green on the inside and home to lots of bacterias and bugs that why it is not save when you sop watering the water stays in the hose and becomes a mini pond if you like. for the plant however there is not a problem as but the time the water gets to the root it has to filter throw the ground you should give this water to animals either.

Yes, it is safe to water your plants this way.

Just as rain water isn't always safe to drink but doesn't effect the nutritional value of produce a garden hose is harmless.
