What did you think of the AFI's movie list?

Last Night the AFI had its '100 movies, 100 Years' on CBS.

Their 'Top 10' list was

1. 'Citizen Kane'

2. 'Casablanca'

3. 'The Godfather'

4. 'Gone With The Wind'

5. 'Lawrence Of Arabia'

6. 'The Wizard Of Oz'

7. 'The Graduate'

8. 'On The Waterfront'

9. 'Schindler's List'

10. 'Singin' In The Rain'

The only one I have a problem with is 'The Wizard Of Oz', which wouldn't have made my top 500.

It's hard to argue with those 10, though it's hard for anyone younger than 40 to relate to The Graduate, and On The Waterfront feels a bit too idealistic and dated nowadays. I've always thought Lawrence of Arabia was overrated, but it's widely loved.

It is definitely weighted too heavily towards older films. Pulp Fiction is ranked in the 90's, if I remember correctly, and classics like Hoop Dreams and The Shawshank Redemption are nowhere to be found.

I enjoyed it very much actually, i was shocked though when they announced Citizen Kane and it was actually The Godfather who got number 2 and not casablanca lol. I wished tho that they would put It's a wonderful life" on #10 instead of singin in the rain . I liked The Wizard of Oz by how great it was made, Imagine hand painting each one of those negatives! Thats alot of work, I judge each movie on HOW it was made and not just the storyline

I think the list was too geared towards older movies. Also Godfather 2 was on the 30s and a lot of people consider it superior to the first one. I think Wizard of OZ and The Graduate should've ranked way lower.

I'm pretty happy with the list. I would have had Citizen Kane, Casablanca, and The Godfather tied for first. They are all different generes. You cannot compare them. Citizen Kane is the greatest suspense/mystery. Casablanca is the greatest romance (hands down). And The Godfather is the greatest action/drama.

I think Bogie and Brando would be pleased.
