Want to know how it feels to be a Legal Immigrant?

I filed my paper and waited for my work visa for 3 months. I came here and worked my job and when my visa was about to expire, I went in for my renewal, presenting all check stubs and rent reciepts. I did this for over two years. I also met a man at my job and got married. I still fret each and every time my renewal was nearing. I have a complete file cabinet full of paperwork that I have saved documenting each and every move I have made, and changed my name to my husbands name. I had to pay 70 dollars each time I filed a form. One more year later, I got my citizenship after learning english, keeping a skilled steady job, and filling out forms required each time I moved, or changed jobs. I still fear each time immigration policies become questioned because I am afraid that they will change & all things I have done may not be good enough. This required hard work, & I have not broken any laws and have no arrest records. Even so, that fear still lives on.

**Legal immigrant-columbia

Update:

These are not my words, these are words from a person married into my family. I just present them so that it shows more respect for real immigrants who worked hard vs. illegals who invaded.

Update 2:

Her situation does apply here because we support legal immigration, not illegal.

Also, by the way, she says most people from columbia do not like mexicans.

Update 3:

She is a citizen, but she still fears that laws can change and then whatever she has done will then not count.

No one understands that fear, not even me.

I am happy to hear that Citizenship was obtained in a legal fashion. I would hope that once citizenship is obtained, the government would not be so much of a bother. i don't think that the law will change to where citizenship is taken away. If it does, and the government takes away your citizenship, I will surely write to my congressman on your behalf.

Soleiman you have done the right thing by coming here legally. By a moral stand point that is wonderful. This country seems to be catering to the illegals for now but that may change in 2012. Just remember the name Ron Paul or Tom Tancredo. Both of those politicians want to make a difference. Rules were set up for a reason and those who break it should be punished not rewarded. There are some here who are trying to confuse you by acting like they are anti-illegal alien demonstrators but they are not. They are trying to blur the line between anti-illegal and anti-immigrant. We love immigrants and this nation is built up on immigrants. What we do not like is law breaking criminal aliens who want to seize and take this country by force.

Can you imagine how the older legal immigrants from back when Latin Americans still had to follow the rules feel about this newer generation essentially being allowed to waltz over the border line? I mean, they nearly had to jump through hoops of fire to get here, and here are all the MS-13 Salvatrucha gangbangers just pouring over our bullet-ridden border.

You are one of the many millions of immigrants who have come here and respected our laws by doing things the legal route..

One of the main reasons illegal immigration upsets me so much is because of people like you, who take the time out and put effort in to get legal and stay legal.. While these individuals come here with no respect towards our nation or its policies - get a free meal ticket.. Believe me, you're not on your own in this at all.. Those of us born here don't have to worry about doing all the paperwork and making payments, but that doesn't mean I'm happy with what my government is doing to you guys.. We oppose legalizing illegals, but SUPPORT those who have come here legally and we welcome them with open arms.

If our leaders would have enforced our original immigration laws, we would have absolutely no need to change them in the first place. Now, we have to deal with the constant flow of illegals swarming into this nation because our government doesn't care.. In the end, you're the one who will have to end up paying more money to stay legal because of the politicians who support illegal immigration, and because of disrespectful individuals who couldn't care less about the American way of life.

i think your case is rear. especially cause theres different laws for immigration in different countries. you think people from other countries wouldn't do that if it was that easy? how long ago was this 20 -30 years. the laws are much different now and its not that easy anymore because of the illegal immigration debate going on.

your one of the REALLY lucky ones.

    congrats to you.

Columbian's hate Mexicans...wow ...maybe cause they are two great supplyers of marijuana.....the competition is fierce.

A round of applause for you. It wasn't the easy way but it was the right way and the legal way. You are to be admired for your willingness to persevere and not give up... and not make excuses. This is the legacy you will leave yoyur own children... to do what is honest , to do what is right, and to continue to learn that which you do not fully understand.

    God bless.

Congradulations. It is good to have you here in this country. If all immigrants would do this ..... This is what makes our country great though. I hope you don't have any problems but at least you do not have a record of any kind. Does this mean you are a citizen now?

As far as I know, there is no country called "Columbia". Perhaps you meant "Colombia"?

It's hard to take this person's story seriously when the name of their supposed native country is spelled incorrectly.
