Do you think that Russell T Davies should leave BBC1's Doctor Who before he totally ruins the show?!?
Doctor Who has been my favourite TV show since 1981 when i was 3 years old.
I am still in love with the show BUT i feel that the current producer has been trying to turn the show into a figure of ridicule!
The references to Big Brother, The Weakest Link and pointless 'guest' appearances from politicians, McFly, Davina McCall and Trinny & Susannah are absolutely rubbish.
The story arcs that bind each series are becoming boring too.
2005 saw the Daleks back for one episode then to wrap up the season.
2006, same story but with Daleks AND Cybermen.
2007 : The Master. Very good, but do we need story arcs? NO.
The whole 'oh new voice' was the exact same as David Tennant and his 'oh new teeth'.
The rumours of the show being axed annoy me, as do rumours of the fabulous Freema Agyeman being given the chop.
Freema is fantastic as Martha.
Russell should go as he is the new JNT (check Dr Who history). No one is bigger than the show, especially the producer.
Oh and as for Kylie Minogue as a guest star for the Xmas 2007 special...Oh Please! No No No!
There should be more stories set on other planets. There are only so many times Wales or London can be watched without the desire to stop paying your licence fee!
And i know Russell 'brought back the show' but who cares? The BBC own the rights, not him!
And no more Daleks or Cybermen for a few years is fine by me!
Aaah! I forgot about Davros! Bring back Terry Molloy. He is fantastic as the evil Dalek creator...i'd make an exception to the Daleks over-use if Davros came back!
BRING BACK DAVROS!
SpacePhantom, i totally agree with you. Earthshock is a fantastic story as are a lot of the JNT era. I just think that JNT and RTD tend to forget that the show is not just for THEM to watch! (well, obviously not JNT now as he is sadly no longer with us)
I have enjoyed this years storylines including 'Doctor becoming human' and compared to last years series, this one is dynamite.
Last years New Earth was absolute rubbish with the opening line being 'i love travelling with you' in a very sickly manner. made me vomit!

Catherine Tate was always leaving at the end of the current series anyway, whether RTD left or not. Russel. T Davies did a great job as exec producer and lead writer in bringing Doctor Who back to our screens and of building up a great and enthusiastic production team, writing team and cast, but in my opinion he is handing over the job to the perfect replacement in Steven Moffat, and I couldn't be more delighted at the choice. Steven Moffat is a life long Doctor Who fan, and quite possibly the greatest writer of TV drama in the UK at the moment. I hope series 5 will be liberally laced with Moffat's wonderful dark and scary dramatic sensibilities. And how about Sally Sparrow from Moffat's "Blink" for the new companion in series 5? That's got to be a real possibility now.

No producer is ever bigger than their show.
My partner is an actor and has extended contact with DR WHO and does many guest appearances. Through this he gauges the popularity of the current series compared to the classic series and it is true to say that a lot of children prefer the classic series in favour of the new. The danger of any producer advertently or inadvertently runs the risk of letting their personal beliefs infiltrate the product they are working on. Russel T Davies has admitted that he is not interested in the viewers' comments or fans' suggestions and is producing the programme how HE thinks fit. This then makes the programme become a soap box for the person in charge and does not recognise the entertainment values that the general populus should expect. Just like JNT - Russel T Davies has inflicted his personal ideals on the programme i.e. Dr Who has become a "gay icon" moralising on gay issues, which fundamentally is not a problem but should not be used in a TV Cult such as this programme.
Yes, R T Davies SHOULD DEFINITELY LEAVE THE BBC and give the programme a chance to develop a new and fresh approach which is exactly why the original series lasted as long as it did.

I don't think RTD should leave, merely take a back seat more. His production is actually very good, the only problem I see is his writing! Constantly resorting to a deus in machina. Really lazy and annoying. 'oh the entire human race is going to be wiped out how's the doc going to solve it? He can't - let's make someone a god and sort it that way, job done time for cappucino.'
The biggest flaw with the new series is it's constant reference to popular culture. This will instantly date it and confine it to the dustbin instead of the archives.
I love the story arc in this series, it is far better than the last two series', done much better.

Doctor Who has been my favourite TV show since it began in 1963.
As far as the 2005 and 2006 series are concerned I would tend to agree with you. Although I very much enjoyed them overall, I found some of RTD's ideas and style quite annoying.
With the current series, however, I think RTD has finally come good. He now seems to really have gotten into the proper mind set for writing Doctor Who, and the current series has been a massive improvement on the previous two as a result. It would be a great shame if RTD were to give up now, just as he's really gotten into the way of writing well for Doctor Who.
Celebrity appearences - I don't mind them as long as their not intrusive and don't interfere with the story.
Story arcs - I actually quite like these as long as they are done well and everything fits together well at the end without seeming contrived - like the current Saxon / Master one.
I think the Master's personality as portrayed by John Simm is perfect for this series, in that its a reflection of Tennant's sometimes child like enthusiasm as the Doctor. Simm's Master seems to be a perfect antithesis of Tennant's Doctor, just as Delgado's Master was a perfect antithesis of Pertwee's Doctor.
Yes the rumours (mostly started by the Sun "newspaper") annoy me as well. They seem to have a vendetta against the BBC at the moment and are intent on attacking the fan base of one of its most popular shows.
I totally agree about Martha. Freema's portrayal of the companion strikes me as being similar to the stronger female characters from the classic series like Sarah Jane and Romana.
As for JNT (John Nathan Turner, for those who don't know) - yes he was responsible for embarrassing drivel like "Paradise Towers" and "Delta and the Bannermen", but some people tend to forget that he was also responsible for classics like "Earthshock", "The Caves of Androzani" and "Remembrance of the Daleks". Sometimes you just have to take the bad with the good.
Agree about Kylie Minogue as well. Then again I was very sceptical about Billie Piper, and I was wrong about that.
Lastly, you say you don't want to see the Daleks again for a while (I agree with that by the way), but then you say "bring back Davros". How can you have Davros without the Daleks? Seems like a bit of a contradiction don't you think?
Edit: Annie - If RTD specifically made the programme according to the wishes of fans, rather than according the way he saw fit, he would not be doing his job properly and Doctor Who would end up as nothing but a hotch potch of fannish ideas with no appeal to general viewers. No TV producer in their right mind would let fans dictate how a programme should be made.
Besides, he caters quite well for the fans as it is. "The Sound of Drums" contained so many continuity points and references back to the classic series that I almost lost count of them.
One of the big problems during the JNT era, was that he catered too much for Doctor Who fandom, so the show lost its appeal to the general viewers, and therefore, the viewing figures plummeted to all-time lows resulting in Doctor Who's cancellation. Are you really suggesting that they should repeat the mistakes of the past and go down that road again?

As he is largely responsible for reviving the Dr Who franchise, thusly creating a whole new generation of raving fans, no he shouldn't have to leave. He still brings freshness to the series (including adding Freema to the cast) and thus far has not disappointed me. I love that they brought the Master back, and look forward to JohnSimm's performance (i really enjoyed "Life on Mars"). However, I could go a long time without seeing a dalek or cyberman and not be disappointed.

What annoys me most is that every episode with 1 or 2 exceptions is based on earth. There are not many off world stories at all. It didn't used to be like this.
Bring on a new writer now!

I think Russell is actually improving his writing style but should give other great writers a piece of the pie too.I actually like the story arcs and give you a conversation topic with the kids...I love the look on their faces when the penny drops,it's a classic !Doctor Who Forever,or till I pop my cloggs at least !! xxx

This is the first time in the entirety of the series that I've been able to watch a whole season without getting bored.
Maybe that means I enjoy television shows that pander to the masses. But who cares? I'm enjoying it.
As the old saying goes, if you don't like it, don't watch. But obviously, no one who is working for the show thinks he should be sacked. He's bringing them in tons of viewers, thus tons of money. I think you're stuck.

Brilliant question about Russell T Davies. Does the T stand for you no what. Maybe he'll be killed off in the final episode. Not sure about the Freema question though.
