heading up north would be a nice quick trip but if you're wanting to stay overnite for more than one day-i would suggest camping in a tent at one of the many campgrounds or just staying in a hotel for one nite.
i've been to sedona several times and i know my bf would love for me to take him there for a weekend b-day trip. most hotels will run you about 70-100 per nite while the campgrounds are about 7-20 a nite. i'll attach some links for some ideas.
there are several fun things to do in sedona. here are some suggestions.
-slide rock. nature made rock slide that drops you right into the oak creek. it's a ton of fun and a great way to beat the heat. the scenery is awesome too.

-west fork trail of oak creek #108. this is my absolute favorite trail of all time. it's so pretty!! you walk right along oak creek (you cross it a few times too) and there is lush green grass, trees, and a few waterfalls. you have to see it.

another fun thing to do would be to camp at the lake!! canyon lake is about 45 minutes east of phoenix and it's a total blast. my bf,me, and my kids go there several times a year and it's so nice. camping costs about 20 per nite and there is a nice restaraunt at the marina you could enjoy dinner at.

With only $100 it's a little tough, considering the cost of gas these days alone. Maybe a trip out toward Apache Junction to the Botanical Gardens to see the butterflies and have a desert picnic, then an evening twilight cruise on the Dolly Steamboat out that way on Canyon Lake.

You could make your home into your own private getaway too. Just lock the door all weekend, unplug / turn off the phones, and relax together. Think of a good theme he would enjoy and decorate so it looks like a getaway then spend the weekend spoiling him for his birthday.

Because you only have $100 it is rather limiting. Does your boyfriend enjoy camping? There are some beautiful places to go camping and your biggest expense would be your gas to get where ever you might want to go. The White Mountains are gorgeous and this time of year just the right place to go to get out of the heat. You could also head up the freeway and go toward Prescott and Lynx Lake, still a little warm, but a great place to camp. I hope you and your boyfriend have a wonderful time, whatever you decide to do.
