I had the same thing and it was due to dust collecting in the fan, so I had to get some compressed air from the computer shop in a can and blow it out. Then the fan was not working so hard. ONE WORD OF CAUTION MAKE SURE YOU HOLD THE CAN UPRIGHT WHEN DOING THIS AS ANY PROPELLANT THAT COMES OUT WHEN YOU ARE HOLDING IT ON ITS SIDE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR MOTHER BOARD

If your fan is noisy then the fan isn't working properly, leave your machine off, because overheating can damage your computer badly.

Be careful replacing your fan if that's what you choose to do, you will probably need some thermal cement and it can be fiddly if you have not done it before. If you have consistant problems with your machine overheating, you may want to add more fans...or consider a water cooling system instead. Coolant systems can be more efficient and potentially use less power than 3 or more fans. I suggest that you find somebody who knows a little about pc hardware to help you if you go that way.

Also make sure that your computer is well ventilated- clean of dust and lint, and is not surrounded by clutter, all of that will contribute to it overheating.

It's probably a build-up of dust and fluff, making it get a bit warm. PCs are very prone to this.

Disconnect the pc, take the case off, earth yourself to the chassis, and then clean it out carefully with a small (new) paintbrush and a can of compressed air.

As you rightly said, the fan is programmed to keep the CPU cool. If you're using more memory, have a lot more saved on the hard drive or have multiple programmes running then your fan will work harder to cool the unit.

Does the fan comes with a "controller" which you can set to different speed like Low, Med, High?

If not you might want to try to search the web for a software fan speed controller.

you lost another fan...the one that cools your mother board.

I suggest you take it to a geek and have them check it out.

a new fan runs about $15 plus install, cleaning the dust is a few bucks more. Seems to me I never get out of them thar places without dropping a $50 bill.
