Ugly veneer shelves bolted to the wall...what are my refinishing options?

OK, I kinda need the space, but the ugly orangey "pine" veneer shelves in my bathroom really don't match the actual pine paneling or the "oak" vanity or the oak towel racks and toothbrush holder.

Something's gotta give! Can I refinish veneer (a piece of it is missing off the front of one of the shelves--I'd have to replace that, anyway.)? Or should I just paint over it? If I paint it, what kind of primer should I use?

    I've considered this thoroughly, and after weighing in the facts, including; A: I have veneer B; paint sucks, especially in humid bathrooms where it peels off C; if it aint broke, don't fix it, so here's my answer;

    use epoxy to fasten precut panels of imitation marble, wood, or something which can give a professional and solid look. White or charcoal polycarbonate is one option, but cheap, there is wood flooring, strong and scratch resistant, but cheap, there's fake marble that's ok, but real marbe would be great if you have the space. There are many tile options also. Try Lowes, and spot something you like.

    What I did with old veneer was to place the flooring place N price tiles on the them., right over the veneer. You can get them in a ton of colors and one will certainly match your oak vanity. You can then get a decorative wood molding at a home improvement store such a Home Depot and tack it along the shelf front. The molding comes in different widths so you should find one that fits the front nicely. I have done a kitchen counter top in this way and it looks really nice.

    You are going to think this is weird but it works and looks great,,,

    Go to a local Wal-Mart or Dollar store and check out the "contact paper"...They will carry a variety of designs and some of them are wood grained...

    Its vinyl and will look great with a little practice putting it down....Just be sure that the shelves are clean....And you can clean them with foaming bathroom cleaner...

    Oh and just fill in any chipped areas with Bondo...It will be hard plastic and will hold up better than the wood itself...
