Why do so many Yahoo Answerers provide irrelevant or WRONG references to their answers?
These answers often get chose as best BY ASKER EVEN! I'm answering a question right now where a woman wanted to know alternatives to flea pest control so it wouldn't harm her dogs. The answerer provided three links, one of which was an article on alternate forms of flea control. The article discusses using oils and plants, but the concentrations necessary killed dogs! Is this what we have become! Informationally retarded! OH THE HUMANITY!

The people in which you refer are only answering in an attempt to get the Best Answer. Part of this is the belief they must be one of the first three answers. First is the preferred position.
In order to accomplish the above they do a quick Google or Yahoo, copy and paste some site links (without reading the site(s)) in hopes of their answer being in one of those positions.
As far as the Asker choosing an answer like that as the BA, there could be several reasons. Not being really interested in an answer is one reason. This usually means the person thinks this site is for asking questions and not answering them, so the question was just something they made up to fulfill the perceived obligation of asking questions. They then select the first answer that appears knowledgable as the BA. Because it has links, the Answerer must know what he is talking about, right?
Another reason may be the Askers diminished ability to read. Federally mandated testing is showing that 50% of HS grads read at the 3rd grade level (100 wpm or less). Of the remaining 50% less than 10% read 500 - 800 wpm, and less than 1% read above 1000 wpm. Reading speed is the most important part of comprehending what you read. At 100 wpm or less you are only reading one word at a time and cannot comprehend a sentence, paragraph or more. 500 - 800 wpm allows, on average, 50 - 60% comprehension. Those reading 1000wpm, or more, consistantly have 99 - 100% comprehension rates.
So, knowing that this site may have a large number of members that cannot read above a 3rd grade level explains why some of the BA's are extremely poor choices. Answers they find as cute, makes them laugh, or looks knowledgable get chosen.
