Basically, it's any food with little (or no) additives. So raw veggies, fruit, grilled/broiled meats, whole grain products, etc., would fall into that category.

Whole foods are unprocessed foods with all the nutrients.
Corn on the cob is whole food, canned corn is not.
Whole grain may include the germ that has nutrients and protein... Whole rice is the same.
A near opposite of "Whole" is "processed" ... sometimes marketers will use "Whole" for their own purposes.
Typically, processing will remove essential oils and nutrients, because these important items - which are very healthy - do not have a long shelf life and may spoil or go rancid.
Sometimes, live food and whole food mean the same thing...

Whole foods are foods that have been processed as little as possible. The phrase is interchangeable with natural.

"Whole Food" is a term that generally refers to food which has been altered very little or not at all.
As an example:
Fresh Green Beans (Organically grown) = whole food
Fresh Green Beans (non-organic) altered by use of pesticide and/or chemicals, or genetic altering = not whole
Canned or Frozen Green Beans: Cooked, stripped of vitamins, salt added, extenders added to promote longer shelf life, etc. = not whole
Bean Powder: Cooked, dried, ground up, sodium added for flavor, extenders added for shelf life, color added for desirability, etc. = not whole
I hope this has helped.
