Is Matt Cain the best 2-9 pitcher in major league history?

He has gotten 2 runs or less in 13 or his 15 starts....i guess hes the tough luck starter for this year..im just wondering if there has been another pitcher with a bad record but great pitching performances.

You only have to look back as recently as 1987, when Nolan Ryan went 8-16 and led the lead with a 2.76 ERA. That's hard-luck pitching.

Jack Nabors of the 1916 A's was a real hard-luck pitcher, going 1-20 with an ERA of 3.47. His teammate Tom Sheehan had a record of 1-16-3.69, showing a little hard luck himself. Nabors had some lousy run support -- on fourteen occasions, the A's scored two or fewer runs for him, and in five of those occasions, they were shut out.

He has some brutally tough luck this year. The Giants have been shutout in 3 of his starts (he gave up 1 run in each of those) additionally they've only scored over 4 runs for him 3 times this season....it makes it tough on the pitcher. I'm holding on to him in my leagues...if nothing else he runs up the K's and keeps my ERA low. His WHIP is reasonable...I have to think the hard luck will turn around and he'll pick up some wins.

Keep telling me good things. I'm just about to dump his butt to free agency.
