American/English expression?

Alright my American friends. I have another expression for you guys, or maybe two at once even.

What's the meaning of:

The poor guy caught the fits (and threw away all my grits.)

I'm a little troubled by the grits. I mean, why would anyone be carrying around tiny bits of rock? What can it be, some kind of food?

Thanks for any help.

Update:

That was fast. Good job.

Grits is a food stuff (corn meal) generally eaten in the Southern States. The saying may likely come from the US South.

To catch or have a fit means to go into a tantrum.... and by having a fit the grits went flying.

Yes, grits is food. It's like oatmeal, but instead of oats, I think they use corn. But it is eaten the same way. I'm Canadian. We eat oatmeal. But when I was in a Florida restaurant, they served grits. It was very much like oatmeal, served in cereal bowls and they had brown sugar beside it to sprinkle on top. I always sprinkle brown sugar on my oatmeal.

Grits are disgusting! oh my god! But yeah, it means the poor guy got sick and threw up.

It's in the song John B's Sails aka Sloop John B, by the Beach Boys.
