Does it hurt when you get a tongue ring?
I wanted to get a tongue ring but I'm scared it will hurt. Will it? Some people say yes and some say no. How does it feel? Does it just feel like you bit your tongue really hard?

before you get a tounge ring u need to know what it stands for.and what it repersents.Firstly, on the day of my piercing, upon entering the Studio I felt reassured once I saw their wall of acreditations (they have won best piercer several years in a row now for the Hamilton/Niagara region I believe it is). But none the less I met with Dustin who would be my piercer and he comforted my tensions right away. He reminded me of the aftercare procedures and what the piercing would entail, and gave me a little booklet to look over. I asked him how long it would take to heal, and he said it depends on the person but usually a week or so. Boy would I be surprised when I got mine done....Overall the pre piercing visitation helped to calm my nerves and hesitations about getting my tongue pierced. Plus, I could look at the types of jewely I could use. He recommended stainless steel as it is the best...dont go buying any tongue jewely from Clare's or any of those places as they rarely sterilize them properly. I recommend buying all tongue jewellry from a piercer.
So the day of my piercing I went with two friends for support and of course to show of my hot tongue piercing! I sadly could only bring in one friend (which was settled by the time tested means of rock paper scissors might I add). So once I was seated, Dustin explained the technique. "I will not be using a clamp". I immediately gasped and reacted with shock. "What do you mean, you wont be using the clamp..isnt that not safe?" He explained to me that a clamp was not needed simply because the tongue would not retract because you it would be done so fast you wouldnt realize it. And he has done it before with no complaints either. He would so true, I really recommend getting no clamp because it heals a lot faster too. The next day I could eat and I hardly had a lisp..contrary to what I thought..my tongue barely swelled up (yes it did swell to the size of the barbell..but i could manage it..it was not even painful).
Aftercare is not a problem. You just have to brush and gargle with salt water after you eat..it will take time getting used to, but it will pay off in the end. Brushing your tongue and under your tongue is a must as well. You do not need to buy listerine and they also do not recommend it as it kills important bacteria needed to heal your tongue. A simple salt water combination will suffice for healing. My meals were basically soft foods for 1-2days and I then progressed to more solid foods, just eat slowly as to avoid bitting your tongue piercing. Which oddly enough I never did once.
After about 3-4 weeks you need to get the barbel changed to a smaller size, so you dont ruin your teeth! Make sure you do this as your teeth run the risk of getting chipped when your tongue reduces the swelling and goes back to its normal size. Normally the new barbell does not need to cost much, you can simply ask for a new barbell and keep your old balls to re-attach at either end (it saves money).
After all the healing is done, your free to do whatever you want with the piercing. But during the healing process they recommend no mouth to mouth contact of any kind....make sure you do this as you do not want to infect your tongue! Tongue piercings are fun like that, when I'm bored you can always catch me playing with it.
Overall, my experience was very positive and I recommend tongue piercings to all, they are not as bad as people make them out to be. I plan on getting my nose done on the 17th of this month at the same place...so all you Hamiltonians and others go to Cottage 13!
Also, if anyone has any questions about tongue piercings/nose piercings/cartilege piercings feel free to ask! I have 2 14g in each ear, my cartilege, tongue and soon to be nose done! I also hope to get my industrial done in the summer!

Honestly, when i got my tongue pireced. it didnt hurt at all. I was scared at first as well. Mainly because of my phobia with needles. but I love getting piercings. It only hurt after I got the actual piercing. My tongue didn't even sweel up like I was told by people who i asked. I couldn't eat for a week. I use to joke and tell people who ask and say it's the best diet ever. In the end the pain was gone after a week. I hope this helps. :-)

Some people say it does and doesn't. If I were to get my tongue pierced or any other piercing, I would have it done freehand because freehand piercers are more experience and they know exactly where the needle should go through. Clamps put pressure onto the piercing area and it might hurt less. So eh? Don't worry! If you're scared of the pain, ask the piercer to put some numbing stuff on it. Usually, people say it hurts a lot if you pierce it the second time.
Mmmmm, piercings are good for oral sex. ;)

Ok. I was in the same situation as you. I watched videos, read about the risks, everything. When the day finally came, i was scared. I knew this was my only shot so i sucked it up and did it. Did it hurt? Well yeah, not gonna lie. you ARE getting a needle shoved thru your tongue lol. But it isnt unbearable pain. Its like biting your tongue. In 2 seconds its done and a tiny bit sore. Thats all (: its totally worth it. Dont sike yourself up

It doesn't just at all! Believe it or not, I got mine done and didn't feel a thing. You would think that because it hurts sooo bad when you bite your tongue that it would hurt but it doesn't. Afterwards it swells and you have to eat soft foods for a couple days but it was well worth it. I love mine! It's been a breeze to change and take care of as well. You should do it!

Well it is a metal bar going into your flesh so it's not especially pleasant! It's not as bad as it sounds though, mine was a bit uncomfortable for a while after I got it done, could still eat ok but spoke with a lisp for a couple of days. Go for it!

i got mine done when i turned 18. it doesnt hurt when they do it. it just feels like theyre resting a needle on your tongue. before you know it, its over. but 10 minutes later you will embark on 2-3 weeks of HELL.
i think its worth it tho

the initial piercing is not bad but the healing process is. not intolerable. what is worse is when you crack a tooth from chomping on it. ouch.
