Why can GM build cars with massive sunroofs, but putting t-tops on the new Camaro won't work?

I've seen Grand Prixs, G6s, and GMC Acadia with the entire top of the car nearly being a giant sunroof. These sun roofs are made of glass of course.

To me, it stands to reason that GM is cutting the 2009 Camaro short by not putting T-tops on, which is essentially removable sunroofs.

I do know that the new Camaro will not be built on the old F-body platform, but the new Zeta platform, which people argue cannot support the t-tops. Does anyone else feel that GM is letting it's Camaro enthusiast down? Should the 2009 Camaro be built on a new platform or a modified Zeta platform that would permit T-tops?

Please don't tell me that it would cost too much, take too long to rebuild, or that kind of crap, despite hardships, GM is still raking in billions of dollars, and is the second largest car producer in the world.

While T-tops may not have made a debut on the 1967 Camaro, they are still a tradition that I don't think is worth losing because GM is dead set on this Zeta platform

It's probably something idiotic like safety.

If the car rolls because everyone plans on rolling their favourite car.- right? It probably comprimises integrity or something. Much like those structural support bars that they had to put on the Cutlass convertibles.

In the Cutlass Supreme's and Beretta that never came out it was all structural, aside from the cool upright door handles the car lost some of it's rigidity.

My best answer to you would be that the public doesn't really care too much for T-tops. If the people don't demand it, it won't happen. Much like the American automakers (specifically Ford and GM have virtually no coupes - especially NASCAR sized ones). It's a changing marketplace out there.

Won't work because, I feel, to avoid problems. Mainly, waterleaks. Having worked on Chevy's since 1980, the Camaro's from that time forward were horrible with waterleaks. And changing the surrounding weatherstrips was difficult and messy and usually had to be redone a little because of--a waterleak. So I am glad that it won't have t-tops (I haven't heard or read up on anything about the new platform). There will probably be some after-market shops that will be happy to install some for you (DON'T DO IT!). Maybe the can do like the Corvette and have removable roof panels, one painted to match the vehicle and a second one that is tinted and you can see through. Haven't had any major waterleak problems with them! Hope the Camaro's are nice!!!

{The world need hybrid cars or alternative fuels, not selfish 2 seat cars} GM produces the most E85 vehicles on the market. {Why they dont build real cars for everyday, to compite againt the 300,Camry,Altima,Accord,Civic,Sentra,Cor... etc.} You must not know that GM makes the Buick Lacrosse,Lucerne, Chevrolet Impala(E85 engine) Malibu, Aveo, Cobalt, Pontiac Vibe, G6,etc. Why don't you do a little research about an American company before you try and bash it. GM is the biggest employer in the United States and will stay there by producing everyday vehicles for us all

I think is has more to do with structural issue. Because when great amounts of torque are applied to the rear wheels the car tends to twist, thus causing the T-tops to pop off (which happens on my Z28) in order to stop this you either have to install a roll cage which is illegal in most states on the street or beef up the frame which adds weight. I'm also sure that GM isn't going to put out a slow low horse power and torque car since people buying it want to smoke the mustangs. So that's probably why there not on there. Of course T-tops do look cool for there uniqueness even cooler when the pop off down the quarter mile like i did with mine. Hope this helps.

I agree, the new Camaro should have T-tops, then a new generation can let their mullets blow in the wind without being commited to taking down the entire roof, or having a solid roof holding their mullets back.

That is a retro design, like the 67-69 style. Those did not have T tops, and GM probably thinks they wouldn't look right in the new version either. I agree they could if they wanted to...

Are you old enough to remember T-tops? They were (are) a horror. Ill fitting, leaking, heavy and ugly, I never knew what the appeal was. If you want air buy the convertible.

Not sure about that but I do know that the new Camaro will be convertible....just thought I would share that with you!
