I know this is a really stupid question, but it's driving me crazy not knowing!?
I recently adopted a male dog. I've always had females so some of the "guy things" are a little foreign to me. My dog, Beau is a Rott. He was neutered a little over a week ago at about 18 months old. The other day he got an erection while laying on his back. At the base of his penis there were two ping-pong ball sized lumps. One on each side and perfectly round. It was almost like he had another set of testicles. When the erection went away, so did those "balls". I'm sure it's normal, but like I said, it's driving me crazy not knowing. My vet won't be back into the office until next Tuesday. I've asked a couple of people, but no one seems to know what I'm talking about. Any idea if this is normal or not??

It's normal. Dogs will still get erections even if they are shooting blanks. The knots are what "ties" the male to the female during their mating....

The skin has not had time to shrink and the male hormones take about six weeks to leave the body. Even after that, it is possible that he can still have an erection. I have a neutered male her who loves the ladies and they love him! He was neutered under six months of age but he still has high hopes!

Hmm... i don't have an answer for you but calling the SPCA or your vet (or any other center that works with a lot of dogs) might be a good way to find out. Chance are he's either swollen or those are just some sort of glands? But it never hurts to call the vet and find out for sure. You sound like a good dog-mom! Thanks for caring so much about your pet! :)

i havent had this problem personally but my friend had her corgie neutered and the vet said it would take a few days for the hormones to wear off.
my brother had his neutered and his mutt still has two curves of where they used to be. they proably are swollen because of the erection or from the surgery.

Sounds the Cowper's glands. They produce a lubricating pre-ejaculate secreation which balances the pH of the uretha prior to ejaculation and provides a small amount of topical lubrication to the exterior of the penis.
