I was just wandering if anyone has or had a Border Collie? We just adopted one and I'm just wandering are they nice? Do they gorw big? and are they a protective dog? Thanx

Update:

Thank ou for all your answers, It's much appreciated. To those who gave the answers as to you should have the answers before!? I would just like to let you know we adopted the dog from a private owner who knew nothing about dogs and we were afraid the dog would end up in a very bad situation, when we took him to the vet it is then we found out he was a border collie. I was asking these questions so I could take care of him better and we and him could be happy! So before you jump to conclusions answer the questions and keep your smart*** answers to yourselves Thanx

I don't have one myself, but I have a friend who does. They're very nice, and they do get pretty big. I'm not sure on the protective thing, but they're herding dogs, so if you run, they'll chase you and try to 'herd' you.

Collies.. WOW! I love them! They are extreme athletes. They were bred to herd sheep in the British Isles and are still very good at herding on farms and even in herding tournaments. Collies are considered one of the most top agility and flyball breeds too. Collies are intense dogs that love to play fetch. You could throw a tennis ball until your arm falls off and your collie will still be ready to go!

Athletes that they are Collies need lots of exercise and do best with lots of training. because border Collies are very smart they can be hard for some people to train. You always have to stay one step ahead of the dog. The flip side of this is that these dogs are capable of learning almost anything you can teach them. In fact one famous border collie named Rico who lived in germany can corectly identify more than 200 objects by name. That's one smart dog!

Males are about 19 to 22 inches tall and 45 to 55 pounds. Females 18 to 21 inches tall 35 to 45 pounds. Place of origin is great Britten. Group: herding. Colors; All colors.

Personality:Intelligent energetic alert responsive. Lifespan:12 to 14 years. Grooming needs: brushing twice a week. Fun fact: Fly and rex the talking dogs in the hit movie Babe are Collies. For more info: Border Collie Society of America; www.bordercolliesociety.com

I have a female border collie whom i just adore. She is 34 pounds and relatively petite. She is the sweetest dog in the entire world. We have a toddler who is forever picking on her and she is extremely tolerate of him. When she was younger she required tons of exercise or she would be mischievous, however as the years go by she seems to be a bit lazy. She is an inside dog and I have never had any problems with her except when we go to the vet she gets a bit scared but other than that she is awesome. She is not too protective but loves her family. I hope you have great luck and fun with yours.

I don't have a Border Collie, but I know quite a bit about them, since I was thinking of adopting one. They don't grow too big; maybe 40-50lbs. They are very friendly dogs, and one of the smartest breeds, too, so I will not be a problem to train it. As for being protective, I believe that if someone is coming, he might bark, but they're mostly nice dogs, not really guard dogs. i have a border irish setter mix. she is awesome. Very smart. she likes to herd things and is very friendly. she is very social and loves people and other animals. she was very easy to train and picks up on new things all the time. She is now 7 and i have had her since she was 7 weeks, but she still acts like a crazy little puppy sometimes. I think that they are the best dogs around. I have looked into rescuing borders and would definitely get another. best of luck with yours......

They are very intelligent dogs. They can be very energetic. Because of this they need lots of exercise, both phyical and mental or they can become destructive. They can be protective of their family, but very loving dogs to people that they know. Since they are herding dogs, they can try and herd small children and animals. They are medium sized dogs and average between 30-50lbs.

Probably shoulda done some research on them huh!? They are extremely smart dogs...they need lots of training and attention. They are hyper and need lots of exercise. If they don't get these things they could tend to get nasty or start to destroy. They are "working" dogs. This is what they are bred for. They need a job to do, something that they think you need them for and just absolutely cannot do without them. They want to have a purpose. I'm totally serious...I'm not pullin your chain. Good luck...!

    Currently have one.

    They can be great dogs.

Expect them to want to play. Given the opportunity they will keep bringing a tennis ball back to you for you to throw until your arm falls off.
