Store bought Spaghetti Sauce in a Jar?

I am not fond of spaghetti sauce in a jar, i prefer to make my own.....but when in a hurry, and no time to make it myself, I was wondering if anyone has purchased any jar sauces that come close in taste to home made italian sauce? What is your favorite store bought spaghetti sauce?

thanks!

I make my own too, but have tried "Four Brothers". It's good. I do use their Alfredo sauce whenever I make "Heart Attack on a Plate". It's excellent.

It's been so long that I forget what my Mom's home made spaghetti sauce even tastes like. I buy Ragu with meat or the old world in a huge container monthly, sometimes 2 or 3 of the medium size (seriously). But I find it's the noodles that make it interesting. Someone brought me some "angel hair" spaghetti, it cooks in a couple of minutes cause it's think and goes down softer, so I like that now with parmajan cheese. My mother used to make her sauce and it had a lot of hamburger meat in it so she would put that into the large shells and to us it looked like a whole new kind of meal and then we'd sprinkle a mixture of parmajan and romano cheese. Then my mother would freeze some of her sauce and we'd have sloppy joes on bread or buns (the buns make it really special). It was great. I've tried the spaghetti sauce on elbow noodles, and although it passes for a different kind of meal, well it's just mediocre. When I moved from an apartment once I got a gift and in it was a box of the spinach noodles, and, although kinda weird, that too made a different kind of meal (with the sauce). I suppose if you still had some sauce left you could make ziti or layer it with the long and wide noodles.

When I'm in a hurry and have to use the jar stuff, I cheat and add a package of spaghetti sauce mix to it. The stuff that comes dry, in the package. Like French's. It adds flavor and helps the taste a lot. I would buy Prego or Classico. Let it simmer for a while to blend.

As long as you stay away from Ragu [too sweet] most bottled sauces are pretty good...I usually get a marinara and add my own extra spices [basil, garlic bits] and add a tin of sliced stewed tomatoes--which I mash up a little before adding. Then simmer very low with a few meatballs or a couple of chicken-breasts. For a vegan version, omit meats and put in some sauteed mushrooms & peppers. Even as is out of the jar, you can still add a few quick touches!

The brand called "Old World Style RAGU traditional" it is an outstanding starter product that our family has used for decades and it is always the same. We of course do add our own spices such as more garlic, etc to our preferences so I think you could use your special touch to make this a good recipe. Cooking down the sauce is important also to get the correct viscosity.

Newman's Own has a great line of sauces. They have quite a few flavors and we haven't found one that we didn't like. The marinara is AWESOME. I just add some ground beef and don't have to doctor it at all.

I love making my own sauce too, but in a pinch, I only buy Newman's Own. And it is reasonably priced as well.

  • Me and my italian family use jarred spaghetti sauce all the time we use Prego , it taste very good and also you can by canned sauce wher you can add your own ingredients.

Nothing compares to the home made, but Prego or Ragu are alright. Just take a minute to add a little spice of your own and they aren't too bad.

We love the prego traditional spaghetti sauce, I am not sure how close to authentic it is but its the only kind we eat!

I usually by Ragu Chunky Garden Vegetable- and I add a little extra italian seasoning.
