I have been away from my books, my kitchen etc. and I am a single father with 2 kids and I cook/prepare all meals. For the past 19 months and I have carried one cookbook as my companion and lifesaver. Even when I was a bachelor; I can tell you I could name five books, but one is and always will be my bible: The Joy of Cooking. no brainer for me.

Joy of Cooking
It is inexpensive, has many recipes, and has a lot of articles about food, cooking, and cooking techniques. I'd say it is the best all round cookbook.
The only downside is that it does not have nutritional values for the dishes.
