Can I successfully fill out a patent application on my own, or do I need an attorney?

I have been given conflicting information regarding this. Have any of you patented something? Can you walk me through the process please. Thanks

    Doing it by yourself without legal aid is a sure fire way to have your idea stolen in the final phases. Been there done that. Don't think of the legal fees as fees. Think of it as an investment to what you're making happen.
