It actually very simple. Measure the rooms seperately in full foot increments. (Closest foot over the actual size) Length X Width (in ft.) = total square feet of floor space. (L.xW.=Sq. Ft.) If rooms aren't square measure at the widest and longest points. There will always be trimming left over and large enough ones make great runners for heavy traffic areas. To convert this to sq. yards divide sq. ft. total by 9. (eg. A room 10 ft. x 8 ft is (L) 10 x (W) 8 = 80 sq. ft. 80 sq.ft. divided by 9 (number of sq.ft. in a sq. yd.) = 8.89 sq yds. rounded up = 9 sq.yds.

One thing to keep in mind. Carpet comes on 12' wide rolls so a piece to cover an 8' x10' room would actually be 12' x 10'=120sq.ft. or

13.33 sq. yrds. In this case you would not round up. Hope I didn't confuse you. Good luck!

Sam needs to his tape measure out and measure the length and width of each room. Afterwards, Sam should multiply the length and with of each room to calculate the square footage (area) and then add them together to know how much carpet to buy.

Or he could call a carpet installer and have him or her do the work (and the math).

regardless of the person's name, you measure square footage very easily. The length times the width = sq. foot

    better measure the room first
