If only one person answers my question and it's a useless answer, do they still get the ten points by default
It seems unfair that some numpty replying to a question with a nonsense answer should get the ten points simply by default.
What steps are in place to make sure this cannot happen?
Sorry - I didn't make this clear enough... I'm talking about the 'Best Answer' ten points... It's bad enough that a numpty gets 2 points for writing any old nonsense down.
There have been some numpties answering this question...

Yes, they'd win by default if they logged in to vote for themselves and nobody voted "no best answer."
If you don't like the answers you're getting, you have two (2) options:
(1) Email the question to everyone you know and hope they give you better answers; or
(2) Delete the question before it goes into voting. You lose your points but at least they don't get 10 points for nothing.
You can do #1 by clicking the envelope icon under the question; you do #2 by clicking the pencil icon under the toolbar.
Of course, if #1 fails then you can always fall back on #2... or even extend the time for answering using the pencil icon but, generally, I don't recommend extending the time unless you are forwarding the question to friends and hoping they answer.

No they don't get the points by default. They only get the 10 points if their question was voted as the Best Answer. You can see that many people can answer a question and some numpty replying to a question with a nonsense answer will get the 10 points if he gets more votes then all the other numpty's. I would just delete the question.

As Trish said, before the questions Open status expires and it goes to the vote, you have the choice of selecting the Best Answers or Deleting the question as she instructed. The person will keep the 2 points for answering, but will not get the 10 for a worthless answer.

Not necessary. Although while the question is open, you only have the option to choose a best answer, once the question goes to voting, you have the option to vote for no best answer. If no best answer gets the most votes, then your question will get deleted and your points refunded.
- How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

If there IS one answer that is terrible and that's the only one there, than you could just click 'No Best Answer' underneath all of the answers, so you recieve your 5 points back and nobody gets 10 points. Hope this helps.

Only 2 points are given for an answer. Ten points are awarded to the answerer that the asker selects as the best answer. HOWEVER, you have the option to select "No Best Answer" for a question that you post, so no one gets the ten points. Hope this answers your question. :)

Take this question to Forum. Wiser folks answer questions there. All I can say is there are no steps in place to prevent a useless answer getting 10 pts by default.

I took my own steps when it happened to me. Remove your own question and post it again at a later date. Block the idiot who can't be bothered to give you a proper answer and report them also. Serves them right if you ask me.

no one gets a point by default. the person who selects that answer as the best answer will get three points. u get ten points only if your question is selected as best answer either by asker or some one else.
