    Hi Tanya,

I'm from Melbourne. Down here there are tons of inexpensive things to do.

Eg. our local councils put out a booklet on all the activities, places etc. available, either for free or at minimal cost.

A trip to the beach, even on a cold day (like NOW), rugged up, can be fun.

Picnic in the mountains; walks in the local parks; zoos or community animal farms; catch up with friends (+ their kids); go to an ice-cream parlour etc. etc.

But with all the floods, snow, 'the day after tomorrow' storms we're having, travelling to some places is an adventure in itself :) Maybe an inner tube towed behind the car will become the newest winter watersport here :) (just kidding)

I've had many holiday visits to Sydney and I also lived there last year.

One thing I suggest is that you catch a train (day pass) to the Quay and then catch a ferry across to Manly. You can walk along the beach and have an ice cream. It generally takes up a hole day.

If your kids are youngish you could take them to Taronga Zoo. I know you said inexpensive but it would be a nice treat and this also takes up a hole day.

I'd avoid the new wildlife place at Darling Harbour. It's just all insects. Not worth the money. The Aquarium was quite good though. Espcially if your kids love Nemo.

If you've got teenagers who are into shopping then find factory outlets. They are cheap and my brother and I love them!

Also Jamberoo is not too bad. I can't remember the prices but I'd suggest not going in the school holidays because the lines are MASSIVE!

We also went up the Skytower. They may like that (sorry i'm not sure of the prices)

Also you could have pool parties, baking, hire DVDs etc etc. A nice holiday up the coast would be nice too!!

Have a good holiday. I hope i've helped.

When I get desperate, I usually end up at a Westfield Shopping centre. They usually have activities for kids with themes like Barbie, Nintendo, Dora and Shrek. The activities are free and usually involve cutting, colouring or making something. eg Chatswood this holidays http://westfield.com/chatswood/news/SchoolHolidays...
