Why wear a moneybelt over the hotel room security box when in Amsterdam, Paris or London?

Everyone always says that you should wear a moneybelt to carry your passport and important documents when travelling through Europe.

Why is this a better option than storing these items in the hotel security box in the hotel room?

I can understand a moneybelt when carrying large amounts of cash or in transit to the hotel. But why a moneybelt when you have a saftey box to use?

Thanks.

Only wear the money belt while you are walking about. Always use the safe in the room to hold your passport and other documents that are very hard to replace if they get stolen. The safes in the room you can program your own combination into the safe so only you know what the code is. Also, make a copy of your photo page of your passport and keep it somewhere on you when traveling, if your passport gets stolen, you can take the copy you have to any consulate and help get processed for a new one. Do not try to carry your passport with you while you are in a town, only when traveling to an airport and airplane, otherwise keep it in the hotel safe.

Because people break into those rooms often for the purpose of stealing that. Do you think a security box code is all that hard to crack? In the good days between my ex and I, I would playfully crack the code on his stuff all the time. He would change it, but it was a game. I never stole anything, it was just to show him that I could do it. You're better off with the moneybelt.
