It might be a stupid question, but what exactly does "the seven circles of hell" mean and what are they?

In Dante's Inferno, there are actually nine circles of hell. the first is Limbo.
The remaining eight are for those whose sins are, respectively:
Lust
Gluttony
Greed
Wrath
Heresy
Violence
Fraud
Treason

Read Dante's "Inferno" it is a great classic of the Italian renaissance. The hero gets a tour of hell, and visits seven circles. It isn't exactly Biblical or theologically correct, but it makes for a good read.
