Only 19 complete game shutouts in all off MLB this year...What's the record for fewest in a season??

This seams like an extraordinarily low number even by today's standards when complete games are a rarity. No pitcher has thrown more than one at this point in the year. Would the pace of 38 complete game shutouts for all of baseball be the fewest in a full season ever?

Update:

Just for some comparison, last year there were more than 60 thrown at the end of the season...so less than 40 is a low number, I want to know what the lowest is...

The record low for complete game shutouts is 64 in 1999.

    Random interesting facts..

Catfish Hunter, lifetime 224-166, started 476 games completed 181

1966 Larry Jaster St Louis cardinals, 11-5 for the year. Pitched FIVE complete game shutouts against the Dodgers.

My opinion: today's pitchers are a bunch of wimps. MLB doesn't need pitching coaches, they need a Marine DI to tell these overpaid wimps to shape up and act like men.

ESPN stats don't even bother to list

    complete games.

Well....probably. Complete games are at a record low pace in 2007, so complete game shutouts are probably at a record low pace too.

  • It doesn't seem low to me. Not in the era of pitch counts. Because of the high injury rate of pitchers, Skippers rely more on pitch count more than ever. So even if you are having a great game you will get pulled more than likely. I even think this year a Yankee was pulled while throwing a no-hitter. That's just the way it is today.

To be honest that sounds high to me. If you were to ask me how many there were so far I would have said 10-12. I guess in the N.L its not that tough to do but in the A.L a complete game shutout is a very nice accomplishment and very tough to do.
