Can dead people really look frightened....as if they were frightened to death?
Mystery books often describe murdered people as looking frightened. Is this really possible?
And I guess I need to ask why this would be so. Wouldn't the muscles relax and change the expression on the face?

Certainly. The face retains the last look it had upon death. If fear was the look at death, or pain, then that will show. if a smile or laughter was the last thing before death - then that's what's on the face.
Actaully, no - the muscles don't relax until several days later - so unless the body is immediately moved anf the facailexpresiion reconfigured within the first few minutes after death, rigor mortis sets in, basically freezing the body into that one position and expression until the muslces relax again.

People often need a little help to look peaceful after they have died. Their eyes and/or mouths may need to be closed, and they may need to be positioned in a more natural looking manner so that they appear relaxed.
