How do some people swim with their heads ALWAYS above water? Both freestyle and breast strokes.?

i can swim with head under water and take breaths. But is it easier to swim with head always above water? Which is recommended? How does one do it? I have tried to swim with head above but without success.

swimming with your head above water is not bad its just a preferred style. personally i swim with my head below water because theres less drag from the water, its easier to keep your feet up and if you keep your head up your neck gets sore after a while.

from a racing stand point none of the faster swimmers keep their head above water except maybe in breast stroke, your legs sink, your neck hurts and its slower and requires way more power

I used to swim with my head above the water, Later with the advice of my instructor I learned to swim with the head under water. Its much easier and faster with the head down while swimming. You feel more comfortable that way, What you do is perfectly fine, Don't worry about what others do. Its how you practise initially, and then you would like to stick on to one style because you feel comfy that way...

well it depends what swimming you do...competitively swimming i recommend the head down method which will make you hydrodynamic and makes you swim alot faster also when your head is underwater your arms do not feel uncomfortable swimming...Water polo on the other hand it's best when you have your head up but you're freestyle is different like...when you swim competitively your back hand are facing toward each other and the inside of your hand is facing outward from you but in water polo it's the other way around..you back hand is faced out ward from you so you can swim more comfortably and handle the ball at the same time. To swim faster head down, to see where you're going without goggles on head up...fastest? head down

With the head above all the time, there is a lot more stress on your neck and back, so it is not ideal to do it all the time. head up "freestyle" or "crawl" is most useful for rescues when you want to keep the victim in sight and for water polo when watching the ball. Although strenuous, try doing it for short stretches and build up strength over time.

I like to swim with head above water. But it takes some power, which is thus unavailable for propulsion, so it is slower.

I always swim with my head above the water and it's no struggle for me. Just keep on practicing and eventually your body will get used to it. :)
