i have a problem with an apple powerbook G4: help?

i left it in hibernate for too long, apparently. when i took it out of that mode, all i got was a black screen, and a little spinning colour wheel, before it powered back down. eventually, i shut it down with the power button. when i turn it back on, i get a white screen, the apple logo, and a "wheel", at the bottom, "spinning" endlessly - it never gets to the desktop. i've tried powering it down, with the power button, and restarting, holding down the shift key, hoping to get it into safe mode, but i get the same white screen and endlessly "spinning wheel". anyone know how to get me out of this? thanks in advance.

Update:

i can get it into single user mode, with a command line.

Update 2:

i am not nearly tech savvy enough to open the machine up.

Try removing the system ram and reinstall and see this should solve the problem
