Is it possible for my 4 year old son to be allergic to our new puppy even though we've had a dog for 2 years?
We've had a golden retriever for 2 years. Last week, we adopted an Australian Shephard mix. My son broke out in awful welts all over his body 5 days later. The doctor says it's definitely an allergic reaction. I can not think of any new products, foods, or substances ingested or consumed during that week. Is it possible for him to be allergic to the new puppy and not our old dog?

You can develope new allergies as you get older.
Talk to your doctor about allergy testing, they have specific panels and groups for dogs.

Try bathing the dog in a shampoo you know doesn't bother your son...it could be that the new dog was bathed in a shampoo or has some kind of flea repellent on it that your son is allergic to.
It's unlikely he is allergic to the dog because you already have breed that is not known for being hypoallergenic. Not to mention it didn't show up until five days later. Most pet allergies include red eyes sneezing etc and usually appear after only a few minutes around an animal...what he has sounds like a contact allergy.
Also depending on where you live this is the worst allergy season we have had in years.

I am terribly allergic to some dogs and not others. Maybe there is something in his fur that is bothering him. If I am allergic to a dog it is more of a breathing issue and welts from petting but never just welts - try bathing the dog.

allergies can develope quickly, and at random times. Maybe one of your dogs sheds more than the other, and that caused the reaction. Also, the same is with foods. Has he had a scratch or any other type of test? If not, he should soon.

yes, maybe the new dog triggered an allergic reaction that was underlying the whole time. It has been scientifically proven that allergic reactions don't always rear immediately.
hope that this helped!!

My brother is allergic to one of my dogs but not the rest, and we had dogs when we were kids too and he was fine with all of them. Some dogs just make people sick and some don't.
