Well, do you know what the sweet spot is?
Put a finger on each side of your septum, just inside your nose. Move around your septum a bit. Do you feel that spot just above your cartiledge, about a quarter inch inside your nose? It's softer and less "tough" than the skin above and below it. That's what you want to pierce.
Also, when you clamp it, pull it down a bit so you can get a nice clean line for the needle without hitting the inside of your nostril.
And if you want high quality supplies, this is about the best place ever:

There's nothing wrong with DIY when it's done right. And it sounds like you want to do it right, so best of luck to you.

Why you think your mother is going to be more tolerant of your piercing your septum yourself with a sewing needle or safety pin than getting it done by a professional is beyond me. Do yourself a favor and get it done professionally when your mother permits it.

The best advice I can give is look for the "sweet spot." It's a spot in your nose where there is no cartilage. If you pierce there it should be much easier. Although it's gonna take a lot of luck for you to get it straight.

Get some numbing gel and stick that bad boy through! Good Luck, I had a friend pierce my lip at home. And it turned out fine.
Tooth numbing gel is the best!

Make sure you have something to catch the needle on the other side so you don't accidentally pierce yourself twice. ^_^ A piece of cork works best.

i did mine today and everything was good but the ring was too small to fit..advice is to pierce it with a needle bigger than the hoop
