Jackson is a 14 week old, 20 pound labrador retriever/rotteweiler mix. we think he might have eaten my brother's gerbil. He was in his wire crate at the time, but Bailey (the gerbil) could fit through the bars. He licked her a few days ago. If he ate her, will he get sick?

probably not. call your vet & ask. your puppy more than likely wouldn't eat a gerbil tho. i think he'd play with it & kill it very easily, but i think you'd find evidence of that.i.e. blood or fur around the puppy's mouth or around the house. & gerbils move fast & puppies are very uncoordinated. if he did-i'd worry about him being able to pass the bones thru his system. call your vet ASAP. good luck.

probably not but I feel sorry for the Gerbil.... I would reconsider getting any other "Pocket pet" .. the gerbil probably moved fast or put up a FUN chase as labs are busy busy dogs plus they will eat the kitchen sink if they think they can.. they have bottomless pitts for stomachs....lol....

If that happened, he won't get sick.
I had a Min Pin and 2 Hamsters. The hamsters were escape artists. One day, they both got loose and my Min Pin was laying quietly licking something. It was the Hamster! I thought, "well, that's it for the poor hamster!" She didn't hurt it at all, she was just mothering it!. After that, we taught our Min Pin to "find it". So from then on, when out hamsters "made their break", we would tell her to "find the bubba". (nickname for our hamsters) She had such good hearing! She never missed!

Probably not, but my condolences to your brother and his gerbil! The gerbil needs to be kept up high to protect it from the dog in the future.

Probably not. It would be similar to eating meaty treats or something. If Jackson can eat a cow (beef treats) and livers (liver treats) than he shouldn't have a problem.

he should be fine.in the past my golden retriver would eat dead birds he found in the yard, as much as we tried to get him away from that habit, haha. but he was ALWAYS fine. just keep an eye out for your pup. we dont want him getting into anything bigger. ; )

Yes he will. Puppies digestive system isn't as strong as adult dogs. He could get sick and possibly die.
