RE POST: What kind of CD do I need for my PC?

I want to remove some MS Word documents from my Windows XP laptop. These are simple text documents. Is there a CD which is already formatted that I can use for my computer? I really don't think I need any external drives or devices to offload my files, do I? I'm looking for a simple answer. Thank you.

Update:

I don't u-stand the vocabulary. What Branch?: Is a CD considered a floppy? What kind of CD do I need to get? I don't want to spend $. I'm not offloading music or film, just Word text documents. I don't need it on a keychain. EVOX: I want to remove them so that I can keep them offline in storage for later use. Like old resumes when I'm not looking for a job. Just stuff I want to save. A CD-R sounds right, but what else do I need to know to ask for the right kind at the store? matthew_hetland797: what's "burning"? Does that just mean downloading? Or do you need a special device to do it? D-tale: What's a CD writer? (yes, I'm clueless) DexterZ: does my computer already have cd burning software on it? If I need it, what's it called and where do I get it?

Thank you.

I have the same problem. I have documents in Microsoft word and I have tried to download them onto a CD-R (so I can delete them from the hard drive), but my system says the CD needs to be formatted. I gather from prior answers that means I need some kind of special software.

I'm confused with this one...it seems you haven't got a clue yeah?

Simple text documents can't be Word documents..but anyhow, that's not the case...all blank CDs are already formatted but you need a CD writer, CDs that have already been recorded might be read only...

    EDIT:

You've reached level three on yahoo answers and you are telling me that you don't know what a CD writer is?if you are able to connect to the net and browse sites, you should know what a CD writer is and how CDs are burnt..if you are so clueless, i think you've posted your question to the wrong place..would be quicker to go to a pc shop or take some lessons? :) sorry but honestly, it would be quicker to ask a specialist than me or someone else spending three hours writing about the basics...

buy a 700 MB cd -R and use a cd burning software to urn your word files .guess thats simple.

i don't know if you have a burning software but if your OS is XP then it has a burn cd wizard or you can download a trial version of Nero from the web.

    Also from where is come a 700MB CD-R costs .17 US$ approx.

I don't think thats too much.

a simple answer.... how about this... your question doesn't make any sense... are you saying you just want the Word files gone and everything left the same way? if so, why don't you just delete them?

OR, are you saying you want to format your computer, but you want to save some files you have on it? if so, all you need to do is copy the files to a drive of some sort... like for example a CD-R or a small USB thumb drive... you can buy either of those two types of devices at anywhere from Wal-mart to Best Buy

How much data (size-wise) are you looking at transferring?

If you can put the files into 10 MB chunks, you can email them to yourself via an email service such as Yahoo, GMail, or Hotmail.

It's simpler than burning CDs for that purpose if you are unfamilar with the process.

Hope this helps, pleaes let me know if I can be of more help!
