Fleas in my house laugh at everything I use to kill them?

I've aerosol-bombed the house several times, with bombs for much larger houses than mine. I've loaded down the carpet with Boric Acid powder. I've kept the animals out of the area. I've hosed the carpet down with Raid and other insecticide sprays. The dog and the three cats are all on Revolution, because Frontline Plus just doesn't work (even the vet says the fleas are becoming resistant to it). I've used diatomaceous earth on the dog (to no effect).

What else can I use in the house? I can't even tell if the Revolution is working, because there are so many fleas in the carpet. The only product I've ever seen kill on contact was Brake Parts Cleaner... I've used it to kill wasps in my garage... but I'm not soaking my carpet in that!

First let me tell you that I own a pest control company and what I will recommend is the complete treatment that should help you completely get rid of the fleas.

First, treat the pet with Capstar. This is a pill that you get from the vet that will kill all of the fleas that get on the animal for the first 24 hours. Second, use either Frontline or Advantage, these can also be purchased from the vet. Frontline can be used on pets 12 weeks old or older. Advantage can be used on animals as young as 6 weeks. If the pet is old enough for either product, switch back and forth between the two. One month use one, the next use the other. The reason I recommend this is that there are two main types of fleas that infest pets. One product works better on the first type and the other product works better on the second type. By using both, you make sure you have covered all your bases.

Once the pet has been treated, you must treat your home and yard. The best products to do this would include not only a killing agent, but also a sterilization agent. Inside, I would use Ultracide, if you can get it. (Many on line sites sell it, including e-Bay.) Follow the instructions on the label! Wash all animal’s bedding and vacuum frequently. Throw out the vacuum bag or dump the catch container after every vacuuming. Also, put a flea collar in the bag or catch container, this will help you kill any fleas that you vacuum up. You can never vacuum too much! DO NOT STEAM CLEAN YOUR RUGS! This is a big one! This can hatch flea eggs and make your problem worse.

Outside I would use Demon WP mixed with Gentrol or Nylar, carefully following label instructions. Treat the entire yard, paying special attention to under bushes and low hanging branches. Most of these products can be bought at any Do-It-Yourself Pest Control company either on line or in a store.

Treating your house and yard is just as important as treating the pet!

It is also very important to stay away from the grocery store or box store products like Zodiac or Hartz. Many of these products can cause severe allergic reactions in animals.

I had this problem many years ago from a stray cat and it took a few weeks to completely get rid of them but this is what worked for me.

You could try vacuuming daily. If you have the type of vacuum with a bag put a flea collar in the bag or throw it out and if you have the bagless type empty the canister outside in the trash. You also have to vacuum the furniture because they also get in the furniture and make sure you get every crack and crevice in your home. Sprinkle some kind of flea killing powder inside of couch and chair cushions after vacuuming. One more thing, you must bomb the house (a fogger for everyroom is best) every two to three weeks because you may get the fleas but not the eggs so when the eggs hatch the problems begin again. Make sure to wash all bedding, yours and the dogs, in hot water.

If this doesn't work for you then your only recourse will be service by professionals.

Do you actually see the fleas in the carpeting? The best thing to get rid of the fleas on the pets, themselves, is a dish soap bath. Use in the same way as shampoo. This will kill the fleas right away (as long as you give it a couple of minutes on the animal, and soak all the way through to the skin). Rinse, thoroughly, and towel dry. By the way, after you give your pets a dish soap bath, you will need to repeat the bath in one or two weeks, because the eggs are not killed and the new batch of fleas will need to be killed. Additionally, after each dish soap bath, you need to use a flea comb on the faces, ears, and around the eyes of your pets, because the really fast fleas run there for cover. If you do not do this, once the animal is dry, these survivors will return to the body and start new families.

I'd try steam-cleaning the carpets with the Rug Doctor.

A few years back we moved into a house that had an extreme flea problem; my husband sprayed the carpets with (I think) MrScotts - actually formulated for outdoor use anyway, there was plaid on the bottle as I recall, he put it in a Hudson sprayer and sprayed the carpets good then we used the Rug Dr about 30 minutes later. it was apalling the number of dead fleas it pulled out!

Also when you vacuum it helps to spray the bag with raid or vacuum up a few pieces of flea collar (the only good use for these things IMO to kill the fleas and eggs in the bag.

Another alternative would be a professional deep steam cleaning.

its time to call an exterminator. They have access to insecticides that require licensing that the rest of us can't buy at the store. I would suggest continuing treating the dogs with the revolution and having an exterminator use the good stuff to kill the fleas in the house. Hope it works, I have been down that road before.

That's bizzare! Have you contacted a professional exterminator? Other than replacing all the infested carpeting in your home (not to mention all the other places the fleas could be laying eggs), that might be a good next step.

  • professional exterminator? if boric acid and flea meds from the vet isnt working, im not sure what else to tell you. boric acid is one of the best ways to kill bugs, it dehydrates insects and it should have completley wiped them out...
