I have tried adding her as a contact saying that she has Windows Live, but she still can't see my avatar.

It is because you are signed in as invisible, or your stealth setting is invisible to that person, or you need to click on your display picture box, click on "share my avatar", and click on "use this selection for everyone". Or, possibly your friend's firewall is blocking images that are not on her "safe list".

Pictures/sharing , avatars as well webcams and other extra features dont work that way . Incompatible features .
I would suggest you download windows live , it blows yahoo messnjerks doors in .
