For all the calling that Microsoft get, as a company they have been the single greatest factor in the growth in popularity of the home PC and the catalyst to software and hardware development. The chances of them dying in the foreseeable future are, IMHO, negligible. Love 'em or hate 'em, they are here to stay.
Sadly, Linux distros are not even in the ballpark, never mind the same game. Until the developers come up with an OS that is as simple to get started on as Windows and is compatible with much of the software and hardware available in the market place, the vast majority of people will just play with it.
And Apple have a huge image job to work on with their machines. Most people don't equate ipods etc with Apple Comps.

Ok, this is whats going to happen to Microsoft:
Apple is going to keep making better and cheaper versions with the iPhone just like they did with the iPod. Then some people who are loyal to their wireless server who use Verizon, Sprint, or T-Mobil are going to crack under the pressure and switch to Cingular because they really want one. Then Verizon and them will realize that they would lose less money if they just offered Apple a huge amount of money so that they too can have the iPhone. This transfers all of the power over to Apple instead of the server. They will essentially take over the wireless industry making different versions of the iPhone just like they did with the music industry with the iPod! Then when people have an iPhone and an iPod, they're going to start wondering why they still have their old crappy Windows machine. They'll get a mac, and Apple will have won! Microsoft will slowly get smaller and smaller.

LOL, not likely as most office systems are M$ based, I do however see their desktop OS market taking a hit with the release of vista. M$ is a great product for entry level computer users because it's so dumbed down, eventually you'll want something more and that's when your love affair with linux begins :-P.

expect microsoft to stay around forever.. bill gates owns stock in apple computers. also, i dont know if it is still true, but once Microsoft made a point of having enough cash on hand to operate at full staff for a year even if they didnt sell a single product. ..

I sometimes wonder, and suspect so! I've even seen webmasters suggest they'd use "nothing but" a Mac. I've seen a lot of resentment toward MS. MS has evolved from creativity to white shirts and ties...
