What is wrong with people today? Workmen, sales people, cashiers? I always try to be polite.?

Lately, all I encounter is workmen who are rude and/or don't return phone calls or show up, rude sales people, cashiers -- what's wrong with people today?? It happened again today.

I think our fast-paced society is taking its toll on all of us.

We live in a world that is running out of breath.

People don't care anymore. It's kinda sad really.

I am 33 and have been in 'customer service' related jobs for quite a lot of my life -- any job be it cashier, sales, IT Help Desk, etc ... the job IS customer service --- you CHOSE that job knowing full out that it would require customer interaction and people would be asking you questions.

Why is it then so difficult for those (average) 8 hours a day to accept this and deal with people with at least some slight curtesy.

Now, I will admit that in my jobs I have had plenty of people to whom I would rather not have had to deal with -- but it was my job to. So I did. And I do so in as polite a manner as possilbe. When they were gone did I maybe say something to a coworker about it? Probably -- but to that customer (or whenever ANY customer was around) I would offer that person whatever assistance my job entailed.

Seriously, the managers of these work places should take a look at their workforce. If they see someone who is rude - then guess what, that person probably shouldn't have a customer service job.

"I only make $7/hr... Why should I care?" -- Because it's your job to care!

You don't like it? Suck it up while your there and consider a career change if you don't like it. You have a problem with the job, tell your boss - not the customer who is asking about something.

I have found this too, and what I surmise is this...they don't care about their customers because another customer is right around the corner. There are so many people that most companies can afford to tick off a few people here or there. I mean, think about it, if you get a rude cashier at Target, and you decide to not shop there anymore, will it really impact Target's bottomline? I think the "customer is always right" mentality has gone by the wayside. They care less about the quality of customer service and more about the quantity of customers coming through the door. Cheap prices will keep people coming in spite of poor service.

BTW, I picked Target at random...I've not had a bad experience there (yet).

In response to Lennox's answer, below, I think that's bullocks. Sorry, but I worked minimum wage jobs for several years while I finished HS and college. I still did my best and worked hardest even though I was only making $3.35 or $4.25/hr. If you don't wanna work hard because you're not making much, that says more about your work ethic than it does about the company paying you low wages. Maybe if you showed the company your potential, you could make more money.

Workmen are extremely busy, so thats why they say they'll show up like between noon and 6. Also in certain provinces or states are experiencing a massive boom cycle like Alberta. So they have no problem saying forget you, I have 20 other clients lined up willing to pay me double for my services.

Rude salses people and cashiers are probably in bad moods cuz theres tons of dumbass customers that came in before you. We act nice to those idiots, then after we're mad, and letting out some rage because we couldnt punch them in the face.

But just tell the cashier, I guess your having a bad day, some customers are retarded eh? That'll calm him down. Then continue, and they'll be nicer to you :)

Also lots of them get paid crap money, so they honestly dont care. At jobs where they think they can pay me like $8/hr, or course im gonna be lazy. Theres no incentive for me to work hard. Lots only work hard, when the managers are around, and they have the mindset, o if I get fired, it'll take me the better half of 3 days to get another job.

There are folks out there who just don't seem to know how to be friendly to their customers, isn't there? But I don't know if it's gotten worse in, say, my lifetime or not. It's probably been around forever.

And one thing I've noticed is that people behind a desk or cash register have to tolerate the most rotten behavior from some of the people who approach. If they sink into a dark mood from time to time, I'm not sure I can blame them.

I've noticed the same thing about the employees at my work they all must have take suck pill 2day b/c they are so grouchy. I don't wanna be at work anymore then any of them but I'm smiling and being polite.

Altruism... just try to understand that all people react to things due to causes and conditions in their own life, that may be beyond you control, so your politeness and smile MIGHT make a difference for them and it'll certainly be virtuous for you. Thank you for being kind and polite.

Businesses are not allowed to fire incompetent people any more because of leftist government policies. That's what happened.
