Are correctional officers supervised well?

I have heard pretty cruel things that many correctional officers do like when it is a fight they ignore it until is done and once is done they send inmates to the hole without trying to find out who started it. I heard that if someone is been raped they do the same is this true? Don't this people have mercy for this people who are human beings? are they supervised?.

Update:

Well, I'm not trying to judge anyone or offend anyone. I just trying to find out the truth. I know there are many innocent people there or people who commited petty things who don't deserve not even the guilty one to be treated like animals or worse than animals.

Sorry if anyone got offended .

Prisoners are raped by other inmates all the time. Correctional officers do turn a blind eye to this because they are cowards. You can get any drug you want in prison. And prison officials from the warden all the way down are aware of this. But nothing is done. If you make the guards mad then they do a surprise cell check. And the inmate who the guards were mad at is the only one that they found drugs in his cell. All prisons are run by the inmates not by the prison staff. Prison should be a place that when you haved served your time and are back on the street. You won't even jay walk for fear of going back to prison.

A correctional officer is trained to not break up a fight unitl they have back-up. I am not going to get in between two inmates that are fighting unless one of them is getting badly beaten. If they are both active combatants it is not my emergency therefore I am told not to step in until I have more staff to do so. Of course we try to find out who started it. 9 times out of 10 nobody will talk. The combatants just shut up and the witnesses are no way gonna tell us and break the convict code.

We take all allegations of rape VERY seriously but most of the time we don't hear about it until months after the fact and there is no evidence.

We are supervised. The inmates have recourse if we act out of the scope of our duties. We hold each other accountable fo illicit actions.

Until you have worked inside a prison and seen the mentality of the inmates I would no be so quick to judge a profession by the actions of a few.

They view these people as the scum of the earth. They have the same compassion for them as they had for their victims. If you don't want to be raped by convict, don't go to prison. There are many more prisoners than guards anyway, they can't stop all of them, besides they need to protect themselves.
