Panic attacks while dozing off to sleep?

When I'm just dozing off to sleep, I suddenly wake up with a panicky feeling with my heart pounding and feeling like I'm "dying" and this feeling of impending doom. This happens every night. I have been under a lot of stress, and now I dread going to bed. Anyone else had this? Serious replies please.

Hi! Panic attacks can creep up on you without you being consciously anxious or stressed at the time. It’s the stresses of the day – or week or month – that have built up. The following simple steps should help significantly reduce or eliminate the panic attacks:

    1. Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

    2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks and anxiety. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can take a course for free online at: http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/elear... It has been funded by NHS Scotland and has had great results thus far.

    3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. Do them especially before you go to sleep. This site has instructions on how to do it without the tapes (and other useful info): http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resource...

Hope you feel better soon. Best of luck.

I am so happy, it was only a 35 minute drive ( 70 minutes total) but absolutely no sign of anxiety or panic i shopped till I dropped - brilliant! I will now go for the next stage DUAL CARRIAGE way, probably at the weekend, with my husband accompanying me first then the solo drive, if successful the final stage of driving on motorway

I've had "night terrors" all my life (though not every night) which is sort of like that. I get them when I'm under stress also. Try to relax before bed, it's really impotent. Try to get in the mind set of sleep, tell yourself everythings o.k and that your going to sleep now. I find what works the best for me is very soft music playing all night. What happens is when I drift off to sleep I tune it out, but when I start awake I have something to remind me of where I am and that I safe. Try this for a little bit and see if it goes away. If not see your doctor.

I had the same thing every night for about a month back in march.I was under a lot of stress, I even went for a jog and felt a sharp pain in my back and couldn't stand or breathe. I thought i was having a heart attack so my husband drove me to the ER it was nothing but it felt like I was dying. Stresssss is a big factor in stuff like this. I get the heart pounding thing every once in a while..I just do my best to relax and breathe and I eventually fall asleep.

I had the same symptoms. Dr. diagnosed me with panic attacks, and prescribed something to help me sleep. It's a really bad feeling to dread going to bed! Hand in there!! ;)

It might be a number of things for example your sugar level or how late at night you eat something with sugars or caffeine, but to be sure see a Doctor.

I drink Chamomile tea or this other tea called Calm and they seem to help, and both are found in most grocery stores.

Good luck to you and peace.

I know this is far from being scientific, but when the fear is at its peak maybe you can punch your arm out as if knocking out an imaginary opponent! That's what I do, hehehe :>
