When baking cookies, what's the difference between creaming butter and sugar or using melted butter?

I was recently making some cookies from my mom's recipe, it'd been a long time since I'd made them. They asked for melted butter to be mixed into the dry ingredients, instead of creaming the butter with the sugars.

So what difference does this make? Does it give the cookies a different texture or anything or is it just a different way of baking?

I hope some of you know better than I. Thank you in advance.

Update:

I have been warned about not adding hot butter to recipes, as it'll cook the egg, but I forgot to write it in, thanks though.

If the recipe says melted butter, then it was designed to use that. If you substituted melted butter instead of creaming the butter with sugar, the cookies might rise less, and the difference would mainly be in texture. Creaming is a way of adding air to cookies or cakes.

Melted butter does a better job of dissolving the sugar improving the consistency of the dough as you work with it, as well as the texture of the cookie when you're done.

You can use melted butter there will be no difference in the cookies. BUT,you must be sure you let the butter cool before using it.

I think it is just a preferred method your mom used. Moms are like that you know. That is what makes them so special :-) I have made them both ways and I like the texture of the recipe your mom used better than the other way.
