What books should I read (literature)?
I'm 18 years old and my "reading history" is rather poor.
[ I recently started to read Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and I' m astonished.]
Don't wonder about the type of the books. Just propose your sudjestions, without minding quantity. I'm gonna read them all.

I read The Picture of Dorian Gray last fall, and thought it was quite good. If you enjoy Oscar Wilde's writing, try The Importance of Being Ernest, a very humorous play that he wrote.
Here is some literature that I strongly reccomend! :
*David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
*Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens
*Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
*Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
*The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
*A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dicknens
*The Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Charles Dickens was a wonderful, wonderful writer. I hope you enjoy his novels as much as I have and do.
Here are some other books I have read/had read to me, and found good, though not been absolutely taken by them. Who knows, though, they might be exactly what you like :-)
*The Master of Ballantrae by Robert Louis Stevenson
*The Bride of Lammermoor by Sir Walter Scott
*The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
*The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens
*Emma by Jane Austen
*Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Enjoy your exploration of literature--it's a wonderful world.

Try to find a list of classic novels/writers on the net or at the library and pick and choose. My recommendations would be:
Charles Dickens
Alexander Dumas
Homer: the Iliad is a good starter war story about ancient Troy
Walter Hugo-Hunchback of Notre Dame and more
Thomas Hardy
Edgar Allan Poe
Jack London-excellent adventure stories-Sea Wolf is great
Leo Tolstoy-greatest books written, but long
Try these sites for additional information:

Or browse classic books for more websites.
There are so many classics out there, it is just too time consuming to list them all.
Happy hunting and good reading.

You should choose good authors and then find their books. Charles Dickens is good, perhaps start with a shorter one like A Tale of Two Cities (one of my favourite books). Also George Elliot - Silas Marner; Jane Austin - Pride and Prejudice; Emily Bronte - Wuthering Heights. Then more modern try The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck; something by Tenessee Williams; Lord of the Flies -can't remember the author. Then look at the Booker prize list and choose a couple from there for your most up to date reading.

My dear, there is a reason the Classics are labeled as such. You should go to your local library and procure a card. Then ask a librarian what s/he would suggest. If you liked the comic/ironic view of Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen will be right up your alley. Plus, you can read any book you like without purchasing one.
Good reading.

i became 9 once I examine Jane Eyre and enjoyed it, I nonetheless like it now at 40 8! I additionally like Jane Austin, D H Lawrence's woman Chatterley's Lover. Oliver Twist is a lot greater powerful than the flicks and A Christmas Carol by ability of Dickens. If the previous english form lauguage is tough to understand attempt listening to classics on audio e book, in case you get unabridged variations you are able to then stick to them with the e book. I truly have a lot of classics on audio and hear them often.

Try Shakespeare. For some reason people are always impressed when other people read him. I recommend Romeo & Juliet (tragedy), Twelfth Night (Comedy), Much Ado About Nothing (Comedy), and Hamlet. Those are the ones I've read so far and can truly suggest. I enjoy his comedies more than the tragedies (for obvious reasons, someone croaking at the end is not my cup of tea).

If you like mysteries I would suggest And Then there were none by Agatha Christy, Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, or really any Dan Brown book (angels and demons is the best though). Anne Rice is my favorite author. She writes alot of vampire books like Interveiw with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the damned and Memnoch the Devil... All good books!!
