Best Software for Midi Rendering?
I have been out of the digital music production loop for a while. Back in the day, when I was working on an orchestrated project I would use WinGroove, this is going back maybe 7-8 years. Everything I've done since then has been live music related, but I just took on a project that isn't demanding top top top quality, but I am a bit OCD with my music. Actually composing and recording isn't the problem, but I'm trying to find the best software to use for playback.. Right now I am borrowing a copy of Finale from a friend in music school, but I am not happy with some of the higher notes on brasses and strings.
Any suggestions? I've had my eye on Cakewalk Sonar and Cubase (oh yeah, I know nothing about changing library patches or modifying/sampling the actual sounds of instruments beyond program tools).

Well, every software has different compability. Like, when you use expression tools (controller 11 standard GM sequence) to create 'humanly' attack time or crescendo, it will works only on MIDI player, not Score-based MIDI application. YOu have to put different command to create crescendo in Finale. If you put wheel controller on MIDI (to creato arco effect), Finale wont read it either.
That's just a small instance, means, you shouldnt import your already-customised-midi into Finale or SIbelius.
I should suggest you the cheapest MIDI renderer then, Winamp. Built in MIDI renderer, and It basically supports most of synth and soft synthesiser. Sonar is no longer compatible with Windows legacy GS Wavetable softsynth, but WInamp is still.
You'll need to have soft synth to produce CD-quality sample rate.
Just play around with MIDI setting, and find option to create sampling, and write the output as WAV.
If you're not satisfied with the standard WIndows sound set, you can use other softsynth like ROLAND VSC 3.2, or YAMAHA S-YXG50.

Just find soft synth with a driver/sound card emulation base, not plugin for Cubase or Cakewalk, it'd be easier to render.
