Devils coach to be Brent Sutter?
What do you guys think of this? IMO I'm disappointed in Lou (again, he's making of habit of this lately), it was a NO BRAINER to promote John MacClean to coach.
MacClean has done MORE than enough to deserve a shot at head coach. At this rate he'll get tired of waiting for Lou to promote him and go coach somewhere else. I don't want that to happen.
to Bob Loblaw:
How can you say he's the best coach in hockey when he was never coached an NHL game? WHL is one thing, NHL is another...

Yea most likely, sportsnet confirmed it!
Lou isnt giving John a chance at all!!! look at bryan murray who gave it to john paddock!
Oh well Sutter one of the all-times greats should be good!
Source(s): Oh yea and muskratoice, i think ur right, one day, lou will wake up and say: y the hell didnt i take over, sutter ur fired with 1 period to go in the season! lmao! - 1 decade ago
I loved Johnny Mac as a player, but I can't question Lou's choice here. Brent Sutter's young but he's had success as a head coach in the minors and leading Canada's under 21 squad. A different face in the locker room could be a plus too. I expect him to have a lot of energy and the ability to fire this team up.

Nope... I still say they should have brought back Pat Burns as head coach. While talking on WEEI (Boston Sports Talk Station) he said he would love to coach again. Wish we didn't sign Claude Julien, but from what I hear he was good in NJ and Lou got too greedy and decided to take it for himself. I wish Burns wasn't still involved in the Devils organization, he would have been a great fit for this Bruins team, or even the Devils could have had him behind the bench. He won it with them last in 2002-03 and would give them a boost.

You'd rather have McLean than Brent Sutter? Brent has won championships at every level that he was ever involved in. I was extremely upset when he turned down the Isles offer to coach last year. I know that where ever he goes, the team will have winning seasons year after year. He was taught by arguably the greatest GM in hockey history, Bill Torrey. You cannot underestimate that.

i think of this is a plus for the Devils. As a Flames fan this concerns me because of the fact the final element the Flames want is yet another Sutter who's in love with Phaneuf (maximum puffed up participant in the interest with the aid of a techniques)

I'm sure that Brent Sutter will just LOVE Newark NJ!!!
Johnny Mac is the obvious choice. But I have to question Lou's judgement lately, with Gomez & Rafalski leaving.
It's going to be SRO in the new Newark Arena this year.
Tickets are selling fast folks!!
Yeah right!

Well, I think he could very well be one of the best coaches in the hockey right now. I also don't agree with the NO BRAINER to promote Maclean. Why should it be a no brainer when there are BETTER coaches out there? Loyalty? That wouldn't be a good reason.
I am a bit surprised that Sutter was interested in taking the position though.
Source(s): You better re-read my post. Did I say he was the best coach in hockey or the NHL or whatever you claim I said? I said I think he COULD very well be ONE of the best coaches in hockey. I believe that. Also, I would strongly disagree that there is a big difference in being a major junior coach or an NHL coach. It is the SAME GAME son. Only difference is that NHLers get paid, besides that, the same game is played. He also excelled with Team Canada. Was the best coach I have ever saw them have. Works well with youngsters, excels as a motivator, the list goes on and on. I certainly think he is a better coach than Maclean. You can be gauranteed that he has turned down a few offers, that is why I say I was surprised at him taking this one. Lou comes out as a genius on this one. Take a look at the list of coaches who flip flop from junior to the NHL and back. Almost all of the CHL team coaches are NHL caliber. Your guy last year (Claude Julien) included, he coached in the Q. The list is endless really-Michel Therrien- heck, Ted Nolan coached in the Q last year. Alain Vigneault. Tom Renney. The difference between coaching in the NHL and the CHL, I hate to tell you, is next to zero. Like I said money and maybe egos. - Anonymous1 decade ago
Does Lamiorello or somebody have embarrassing pictures of John MacLean? What does this guy have to do to get a head coaching job? If one of the lousy teams in the NHL doesn't hire him after firing their head man this season, I'm really going to wonder. It can't be his baldness, because look at Lamiorello!

Another Sutter coaching in the NHL? It doesn't suprise me. Somehow, guys in that family turn out to be good coaches, or solid players (or both, in the cases of Darryl and Brian).
